Are you referencing Go for Broke or another movie? --------------------------------- Daniel Inouye: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Inouye#Military_service_(1941%E2%80%931947) a Representative from 1559 to 1962 and then a Senator for Hawaii from 1962 to 2012 served in the 442 Infantry Regiment. The 442nd Regiment is the most decorated unit for its size in U.S. military history. Created as the 442nd Regimental Combat Team when it was activated 1 February 1943, the unit quickly grew to its fighting complement of 4,000 men by April 1943, and an eventual total of about 14,000 men served overall. The unit including the 100th Infantry Battalion earned more than 18,000 awards in less than two years, including more than 4,000 Purple Hearts and 4,000 Bronze Star Medals. The unit was awarded eight Presidential Unit Citations (seven between 1944-46, five earned in one month). Twenty-one of its members were awarded Medals of Honor. In 2010, Congress approved the granting of the Congressional Gold Medal to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and associated units who served during World War II, and in 2012, all surviving members were made chevaliers of the French Légion d'Honneur for their actions contributing to the liberation of France and their heroic rescue of the Lost Battalion. "Cabaret" movie (1972): A part-musical, part-romance, part-political film set in the early 1930s -- in what was then becoming Nazi Germany. A "dark" movie. Won many awards.
We had just seen the Cabaret Musical Play Friday night -- so ordered the movie. The Play emphasis was mostly-musical, part romance, small (but definite) part political.
Movie was well done. Not "an on screen copy of a musical play". Rather, a deeper, more complete movie based on the Play script, the Books, History, and added Movie Script. Filmed in Berlin.
Interesting to me, the Cabaret Master of Ceremonies in the Play we saw Friday was a virtual double of the CMoC actor in the movie, looked the same and sang, acted, danced the same, etc -- he nailed it.

Interesting. I had no clue that the Liza Minnelli film was shot in Berlin. It's pretty neat when a Hollywood movie goes that extra mile for authenticity!

I saw two independent movies this weekend, one very bad, one very good:
1) "Officer Downe" -- I watched this because the premise sounded interesting, that a cop kept coming back from the dead to fight crime. That is about all that was interesting about this movie. The director and the writers sucked. The cinematographer, who was pretty good, tried to salvage what he could from this dumpster fire but not even that could save this movie. * out of **** stars.
2) "Holler" -- What a delightful little movie! Enter the blue-collar world of tough work, little pay, and everlasting hardship. This was a drama that delivered in many surprising ways. Sobering and honest. *** 1/2 out of **** stars.

1883, prequel to Yellowstone - enjoying it so far and anything with Sam Elliott in gets my vote. Tom Hanks just appeared in a scene.

I'm not a big fan of Westerns BUT I have never been disappointed by anything that Sam Elliot was in. He's one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood in my opinion.

Hmm, needs about 3 - 4 more seasons before I'll watch. Occasionally I'll make an exception with something like Ozark, but it stinks having a show cancelled and not being able to finish things. Sam is a great actor. PC gaming dominates my free time but I understand where you are coming from. I was a HUGE fan of the scifi series "Caprica" which was a prequel series to "Battlestar Galactica". I was incredibly saddened and disappointed when SyFy cancelled the show even before the entire first season aired in its entirety.

Basil Rathbone in "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (1939). Part of the restored collection of Rathbone as Sherlock movies we're watching.
Per a write up: "Despite his appearing only twice in Doyle's original stories, later adaptations and pastiches have often given Moriarty greater prominence and treated him as Sherlock Holmes' archenemy."
Sherlock and Moriarty traded blows in this one. Moriarty develops a very, very clever ruse to cause Sherlock to discredit himself. Sherlock "bites".
Near the beginning of the movie, Moriarty clearly says to Sherlock's face that Sherlock is his archenemy. Moriarty said to Sherlock he was tired of crime and would rather be a Scientist -- but only after Sherlock was dealt with. Thus, in the film, Moriarty's primary goal was to totally discredit Sherlock -- so that Moriarty could retire from crime as the winner.

Basil Rathbone in "Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror" (1942). Part of the restored collection of Rathbone as Sherlock movies we're watching.
Set in England prior to heavy WW2 attacks on England. Sherlock vs the Nazi's already secretly "stationed" and "working/fighting" in England -- to prepare for a German invasion.
The original Sherlock Holmes stories began in the 1880s and moved up from there. However, the Rathbone movies started in the 1880s but moved to the 1930s for those filmed during wartime. That simplified filming because the 1880s environment was replaced by the 1930s and 1940s environment; and, it allowed plots that were relevant to WW2 and the viewers.

Basil Rathbone in "Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon" (1942). 4th movie of the restored collection of Rathbone as Sherlock movies we're watching. Based on Doyle's story "The Dancing Men" -- the connection is clear in the movie.
Patriotic Sherlock vs totally self serving Moriarty in WW2 England (note the year of the filming --- 1942).
Moriarty cares not for England -- to him its all about the money, power, and "personal satisfaction" of committing crimes others aren't smart enough to commit. For a very high price, Moriarty is trying to provide the Nazi's with England's "Secret Weapon". Sherlock and Moriarty go "blow" for "blow" (figuratively sometimes, actual attempted death blows other times). As usual, the interest comes from the many "twists and turns" and the "logic" of Sherlock's actions -- and the "competing logic" of Moriarty's actions. Who can stay "one step ahead" -- or alive, for that matter?

I finished Curb Your Enthusiasm season 11, hilarious as always. Watched Season 5 of Better Call Saul, what a fantastic show. I look forward to season 6, but it sounds like it will be quite some time. Bob Odenkirk had a heart attack. LINK

"Better Call Saul" is an odd show in that I think they wasted the potential of the first three seasons and things didn't start to get interesting until season 5. I may be in the minority here, but I feel like season 4 was a waste of time with all the effort they put into the Germans and the lab construction. Overall, it has been a decent show--especially the most recent season which has approached "Breaking Bad" levels of writing.

David Suchet as Hercule Poirot in "Murder on the Orient Express" (2010). A movie length part of the Television Series. I remembered seeing a movie with that title and how the movie turned out. But, while watching today, I remembered no scenes. Probably, I saw a different movie version many years ago -- there have been a few versions. This version made clear that Poirot is a devout Catholic -- a revelation to me. We liked it. Several of you are obviously more "educated" regarding movies and TV and "acting" and etc. Thus, I assume most of the "classic" Movies/TV series we're watching have been seen by many of you. And, you remember what you've seen -- unlike me  Lately, I've had a slow healing minor injury that's keeping us from our sports -- so, lots of old Movies and TV Series in the afternoons and evenings -- many for the first time for us. Lots of nostalgia for us in seeing movies set before we were born and actors who are "no longer with us".
