I think there is no actual limit, but a display limit of 999,999.

However I did read there is a maximum workshop storage (for junk and stuff) in Survival mode, but no idea what that limit is.

I'm not finding anything to spend caps on really, I make little effort to sell things. So I figured what the heck, might as well buy Home Plate. It's a dump but I can fix it up if I want. I cleaned it up and moved some stuff around, but no other improvements yet. I might spend a point in Local Leader 2 so I can build shops and crafting stations. Put a clinic in Sanctuary.

At the mo, I'm off to the southeast in power armor, returning to explore the outer edges of the Glowing Sea, and to run a mission to unlock Somerville Place. Plus I think I can get my missing left arm for my X-01 at the abandoned shack, plus my eighth Covert Ops magazine (I read a wiki). More stealth.

I've had as much as 200K caps at one time, but money is not a huge consideration beyond the early game IMO.

The limited amount of caps held by the shopkeepers makes it difficult to make a lot of money quickly by selling loot or manufactured items.

I usually found I was obligated to buy a large amount of junk items from them just to bring the total down to what they could afford.

Late game, the only thing I couldn't get enough of was certain materials, particularly concrete and high tech crafting elements.

A wealthy wanderer for sure. 200k is a fortune in this game.

Hit level 62 and now have four points unspent. Who plays like this?! smile

I entered the institute and did the opening stages there, meeting everyone. But now I'm concerned about how my actions will affect faction relations, and have no real idea of how to go about it. I don't even know which faction I want to align with. But I don't want, at this stage, to close anything off or make enemies out of them.

My expedition back to the Glowing Sea was not so lucrative. I made it in to the facility below the abandoned shack, found the set of X-01 and it had no arms. Just my luck. Did get the Covert Ops mag, so that's good. Then I patrolled home through a small town I think called Natick, which was garrisoned by deathclaws and mutants. Quite a battle arose which was joined by nearby raiders and a BoS vertibird and squad. Fun stuff.

I was leaning hard towards the Railway in the earlier part of my first run, but at some point I went over to the Institute, figuring that they had a lot more going for them than any pitiful little band of wastelanders.

That's interesting. I'm still undecided, and maybe my actions, or the missions I trigger, intentionally or otherwise, could make the decision for me, if I understand how it works. The player must tread carefully at this stage or could find himself in or out, depending.

I liked the Railroad at first. They feel like Freedom from Stalker, who I tend to throw in with in those games. But over time I saw they were not so much synth sympathetic, as supremacist. They grew to feel too zealous, with a skewed perspective on the humanity and synth question. My character started to feel less ethically aligned as time went on. But maybe worse than a question of ethics and morality, they are a bunch of lazy freeloaders. Of all the factions, the Railroad are encountered the least out in the wild. They are content to sit in their subterranean HQ and flap their gums and let the vault dweller do all the work. In exactly the same way I grew to resent the camp followers in RDR 2, i began to see the Railroad the same way. Get to work ya bastages!

The Minutemen feel safe, a Lawful Good vibe. But it feels like without me they'd not stand a chance. They insist on using laser muskets for crying out loud haha. But they were the first friendly people I met in the wastes, and want the right things for the world, even if it feels like they'll never have the capacity to make it so. The sort of underdog you'll pull for, but wouldn't stake your money on.

BoS are the opposite, like Duty to Stalker's Freedom. They also have a skewed perspective, but the capacity to get things done. Of all the factions, it is the BoS out there in the weeds giving the bad guys the good news. It feels like they have the best chance aside from the institute of realizing their vision.

The Institute is too new to me right now. The whole thing was a revelation, from meeting Shaun to seeing the facility and learning their stated goals. Of all the factions, the Institute are the only one to have the ability to truly make the world a better place. But I've been doing this a long time, and I know things can never be that simple, that what I see is likely a veneer, and beneath lies a more sinister foundation. I have yet to uncover this, if it exists, but the cynic in me senses something amiss. They are stringpullers, and I have yet I think to see what's dancing on the end. If I'm honest, I think it's me.

So I have little to pull me in any of those directions. It feels like aligning with the Minutemen will perhaps offend the others less, with any other choice making instant enemies. To avoid making this choice any time soon I've returned to Far Harbor to take in some more of the content there, and maybe get some good DLC gear. Hit Level 63

I still hold three unspent points, but did spend two others on Better Criticals 2 and 3. Along with Critical Banker this means I almost always have one devastating shot in the pocket. I don't use it much, but it's good insurance.

The Railway is mostly just an intelligence network, who are experiencing hard times and who have to operate under the nose of a vast surveillance system who have operatives everywhere and even the birds have cameras in them. I don't blame them for lying low. While I don't believe in their mission, I respect their dedication and level of sophistication despite their circumstances.

The East Coast Brotherhood of Steel has some potential, but I don't see them as being able to successfully govern a region or outgrow their dependence on salvaged tech tech any time soon. What's more, is that they re probably only one leadership squabble away from splintering further.

The Minutemen are good for waiting at the finish line so they can latch onto the real winner IMO.

I nuke the institute every single time. Don't let their stated goals fool you. At best they're bond level villains and they deserve to go down.

OK Deacon.

Even under new management?

The Institute is the only faction that has the means to eventually rebuild the area to any real extent, as well as defend it against significant outside threats.

If Caesar's Legion or the equivalent comes knocking, do you think the Railroad, Minutemen or even the BoS will be able to handle them?

The factions are one of the worst parts about that game. They're all terrible in different ways, except the institute, they're just straight up evil.
Assuming something l like the Legion came to the commonwealth the Institute won't stop them as they don't give a rat's behind what goes on. I'm certain they're whole goal is to straight up genocide everyone in the commonwealth and replace them with synths. Until then, they're just guinea pigs for whatever other experiments they happen to be running on the side.

At least the other three options aren't straight up murdering people and replacing them with synths. Those factions can at least be fixed by a change in management. As for the institute, loot some tech if you need to but nuke those #%&*$# for orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

The institute would probably just replace you with a synth as well if you tried changing them. I don't trust them.

Maybe the message of the game is that in a post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland where resources are few and desperation for survival is high, there will be no outright good faction?

Well, I'll need to make a choice soon, but in the meantime I'm putting it off. After tooling around Far Harbor for a bit I was already irked by the radiation fog, and wondered how best to mitigate it. I decided to go get a set of power armor, and to swap my regular armor chest piece for an identical one that has BoS radiation resistance in place of shadowed. So back to the 'Wealth.

But once again the fact my set of X-01 was incomplete, missing the left arm, irked me too. So I did an internet search and saw there should be a full set on top of 35 Court in Boston. Went there and sure enough there it was. a full set with all pieces, and due to my high level all were already Mk III protection. I went back to Sanctuary to install a few mods, Mk VI on the torso, recon mod on the helmet and then ran out of aluminum. I planned to put the stealth boy torso on it but thankfully I read about it first and saw that the crouch stealth effect burns AP, and that would not have worked.

Then I did the long trek back to the boat to return to Far Harbor. Just hanging out, patrolling and getting Longfellow's cabin set up and arranged to my satisfaction.

Hit level 64

Finally spent my saved points. Dropped two to bring Science up to rank 3, which opened up the power armor mods I wanted to do. I spent another point to get Local Leader 2, and the final point on Scrapper. Which scrapped weapons or armor yield aluminum?

Did you guys use emporiums, or shops in general? I took LL 2 to look at these, but then saw I need to drop another two points in to Cap Collector. Is it worth it in your opinion?

Aluminum isn't particularly rare, I don't think I ever specifically sought it out in my playthroughs. However you can find lots of it in places like Corvega or the Mahkra fish packing plant, or buy shipments from Arturo in Diamond City.

Shops are nice to have for the purposes of raising settler happiness and to conveniently buy and sell items, but be aware that they take a long time to actually turn a profit as far as their tiny daily generated income goes.

I found many of the enemies Far Harbor are good at detecting you while sneaking compared to the Boston counterparts, so wearing power armor may really make sneaking difficult. Mind you, I was looking to get close enough for melee kills most of the time.

I think I'm low because I just built the molecular relay. I'd been collecting the entire game, but I ran out fast yesterday.

My power armor sneaks OK. I have Sneak perk maxed and 8 Covert Ops mags. Seems to do fine keeping me stealthy even in the PA. Good enough anyway, to get those sweet sneak attacks.

I wish you could store fusion cores on exited power armor and then I could jump in and out of it more often in the field. I've hardly used PA in this game, or any Fallout for that matter. But it works well in Far Harbor fog. Fun to mix it up a bit, and gives me more stuff to modify smile

Edit: No, the relay only required ten aluminum it seems, so I didn't have all that much on hand to begin with I guess. I know where to find it, but the Scrapper perk rank 1 specifically states aluminum, but I got none scrapping a number of laser and pipe guns, and some armor pieces. Just curious which ones yield aluminum and I can pick those up on on patrol.

I can't remember what weapons or armor yields aluminum, but of course the more heavily modded the item is from baseline, the better the scrap materials you'll get.

I bet a lot of your missing aluminum is due to your X-01 power armor, which needs a significant amount of it to repair and upgrade.

For this reason, I would normally only use the T-45 or T-51 power armors for patrolling and other routine use, since they mostly only require a modest amount of steel to repair.

It's not specific weapons that scrap into aluminum, but specific mods on that weapon that require aluminum. Breaking those down will give you some aluminum back. It's had to tell if it'll give you aluminum until you look at what mods it has exactly.
Best source is aluminum cans since they only weight 0.1 and yield 2 aluminum. TV trays and surgical trays each yield 3 but weigh 0.5.

You can always buy some, they're expensive.
Making money is easy though. If you build shops in your settlements they'll generate caps that you can pickup from the workshop. Extra water also gets stored in there and you can trade it to merchants to pay for whatever resource you need. Turning Sanctuary into a water factory is a reliable way to make cash. The maximum it'll store in the workshop is 40 purified water, so you'll have to manually empty it out every once in a while.

Those shops and emporiums don't really make you much money, but they make new vendors that you can buy and sell things to. Most of them also provide a job and increases morale of you settlement. Not too sure what high morale does exactly, but if it's too low people may leave.

You're right about the repair costs for X-01, but I have yet to actually repair it since I use it so little. But I did look at the costs to see what they were yesterday.

Do the vendors (like Vault Tec Rep and Rylee) have worthwhile unique items for sale if you set them up with a stall? I don't think I'll bother with emporiums, as I already have the gear I want. But maybe there's something I don't know I want yet...

I can't see dropping two points in to Cap Collector unless it is very worth it. Then again, I'm sort of running out of perks I want.

Speaking of water factories... maybe you guys can help me. I have the castle as a settlement, and it has a water purifier. I powered it up, or at least the light is lit, but I never see any water from it in the workshop. Maybe I should look again, perhaps I don't have enough power to it. Water's not really an issue, but I'd like to have at least one purifier on line I think. Don't go there that often so maybe it doesn't matter at all. Just curious what else I need to do to get it to produce product and have it stock up in the workshop.

I read that advanced receivers yield aluminum, so I'll look for those and get aluminum and screws out of it. Gotta use the perk now that I've dropped a point on it.

Becoming a drug dealer is a straightforward way to make caps, mass produce Jet for the cost of 2 fertilizer, 1 plastic, and sell it to vendors.

You may have at least 1 settlement somewhere that is not self sufficient in water and drawing it via a supply line.

I'm already a drug dealer, but I sell appropriated product.

Yeah, I want the shops for what I can buy, not the money they'll make, which is nice, but not enough to add up to much if I'm not putting them in a number of settlements. It was more for legendary and unique items they may offer for sale. And to dress the place up a bit, and to put these vendors I am meeting to work. Vault Tec Rep was so happy to get the job that doesn't exist smile

Totally not needed, more of a roleplay thing to make Sanctuary feel more advanced and civilized. Then again, when I saw the prices of some of the best armor in Far Harbor I nearly fell of my horse. I'm all like "I have gobs of money" and Far Harbor was like "You have what now?"
