As usual the BOS forum police are maintaining a zero tolerance policy on awkward questions I thought it would be worth maintaining a healthy discussion on these boards.

A recently locked thread...

http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/4991-oculus-rift-pilot-body/

typically as is the regular way of things over there, another of the unanswered questions was raised prompting the requisite accusations of 'E rage'.
The 'question' in question is why did the devs drop support for the Oculus rift, as usual the forum police clamped down and locked the thread but not before making the obligatory claim that it's because Oculus dropped DX9 support, the problem with that claim is and has been pointed out that despite this it is possible for DX9 game engines to communicate with DX11 which oculus does support, and this is evident in the fact that many DX9 demos and software are regularly being used in the Oculus to date and further confirmed by this post made by a representative of Oculus themselves in this topic https://forums.oculus.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=26077
This sadly leaves the question unanswered with only the BOS devs able to answer, which of course they won't and are actively being protected from being asked the question.

My conclusion is it's another broken promise, they lacked the budget/time/talent (delete as applicable) and didn't have the balls to admit it but found the easy thing to do was blame someone else.

I think OR, as it can now and in the near future, be applied to gaming is a non issue.

I have no respect for 777 or the russian guys in charge of bos or people in charge of their forum but any discussion of OR as it might apply to bos might be considered a waste of time.

I am sure that VR tech will happen but it is too early for general use.

I own an oculus DK2 and from what I have experienced it's just around the corner and CV1 is likely to be just fine, I think VR is very ready for flight simulation, there is a reluctance from the flight sim community however.

Ha!
"my wife's inability to easily get eye contact with me to ask a simple question is not a small deal. Already us gamers have to deal with eye rolls from the significant other when we are playing our games. With VR people feel very put off by the fact that you are in the same room as them yet can give them NONE of your attention."

I was going to say VR has certainly the lowest Wife Acceptance Factor of any tech product in the history of ever nope

It might as well be as far as it's WAF rating is concerned.

I said the same thing a while back bongo. The BoS devs screwed up after hyping it up, then put the blame elsewhere as is a typical.

But just like other issues (like the hits sounds that are STILL not working for everyone), it's ignored and swept under a rug....locked away so people can't question it.

Nice cherry picking of statements there BD,

I never said that they were dropping VR support for a good reason, just that THAT was there reason. I also own a DK2 AND a gear VR 2. Even at the higher res its just not ready. I cant WAIT until the day it is, and absolutely hope that the DEVS change their mind. From what I saw of their first implementation though, I think they may need to hire someone. They had the strangest idea about how it should look, it was not at all immersive, and honestly just proved that they, (along with many other studios) don't currently have the right people to do this.

However, you will be happy to know that Jason has expressed many times to the team that this needs to be a priority. We'll see if Loft and co. listen to reason.

I can tell you though that DCS is WAY ahead in this regard and provides a great experience, albeit with tags on. when the resolution gets increased I have no doubt this will drive in revenue for anyone who does this.......correctly.

I love the way discussions so frequently get shut down over there just because...

It seems you don't need to break a rule to have a topic locked, it just has to be concerning "something we don't want discussed here any longer"

Hooves, dont confuse making salient points with cherry picking, it's not like I omitted any valid points from the other side as there were none.

I'm sure 1cgs got a few more pre order sales out of the Oculus Rift idea so it's all good...

I really don't see the point in 1CGS spending any money on further development for DK2 it is a dev kit that will be totally redundant when CV1 customer version is released.

Oculas Rift changed their plan, and dropped support for DX9 for CV1

BoS is DX9, to re-write for DX11-12 is a massive undertaking that is not financially viable currently. DCS have spent a long time....years, to get their DX9 engine to DX11, If and when that happens with BoS I am sure VR support will be reassessed

How 1CGS can be blamed for Oculas Rifts change of design decisions after acquisition by facebook is beyond me.

You think work on supporting Oculus now will require reworking when the consumer version is released? I thought you understood all aspects of software development.
Your previous posts on the subject imply you're an expert.

Perhaps all the developers that are building support for Oculus now, know something you don't.
Perhaps it will be far more efficient to tweak their existing implementation so they have a working product at release, rather than waiting to build from scratch and missing that initial hype.

You didn't read BD's previous posts on this then I take it. Other games that are running in DX9 support Oculus, so why should BOS be any different?

Funny how 1C/777 seem to be in a very small minority when it comes to excuses and blaming Facebook.
Even Notch has had a U-turn and apologised for his previous misguided outburst on the matter.

Of course , it is their modus operandi. The poster who was asking the questions was told to get over it , and the thread gets locked. Very typical 1CGS mentality toward the consumers.

I suspect they just do not have the know how, which apparently they don't have for a lot of things...

I think you have this all backwards.

1C/777 made the decision to drop Oculus support.

Blaming Facebook's buyout and/or Oculus dropping support for DirectX 9 doesn't wash when you consider that plenty of other developers with DirectX 9 engines are still adding Oculus support to their games.

So, why are these other developers, with DirectX 9 games, able to get their games working with Oculus, where 1C/777 can't?

I wonder how many of you that seem so upset over this actually own a PC capable of running the consumer release of OR when it arrives next year.

Which of you can run BoS at 1200x2160 at a constant 90 fps?

Your question hides behind the fact the developers, for reasons only known to them, failed to implement a dx11/12 engine when they decided to develop this game. This game is using decade old technology in an industry that is constantly improving. They are completely short sighted or downright lazy. Probably both.
But hey they're the only current developer doing a WW2 combat flight simulator right? May as well support them if you're as short sighted as they are. Spend your money on a product parked in a cul-de-sac of no ambition

Wags July 2014 "In this July 2014 update, the primary news is in regards to the restructured backer rewards. After a careful review of the older system under RRG, we found it financially unattainable."
Wags October 2017 "the investment vs. generated revenue has been excellent for the World War II aircraft. In fact, the P-51D Mustang has twice the cost effectiveness of the A-10C Warthog."
