This thing had always been on something else,
Something terrible,
Something with unaesthetic lines,
Something with ugly cockpit colors,

The thing deserved better.
The thing deserved a Bus.

Beautifully thin and very light for a 17", but be aware it has no optical drive.


It's my second MSI gaming laptop. After flight simming on laptops out of necessity for over a decade now the MSI ones for me are far and away the best choice. Very good build quality, good specs, off the shelf models without the inflated price tag of custom build or boutique brands (Alienware... overpriced, poor build quality).

This one cost me just shy of �1,500, so following the usual convention that the pricing of consumer electronics in the US versus the UK merely involves swapping the � sign for a $ sign you should be able to pick one up for considerably less than I did.

The 970m and 980m almost close the desktop/laptop gap, almost. Couple more years and mobile GPU's will defiantly be on par with their desktop counterparts.

I've owned three gaming laptops, really expensive ones ($2300+). This was primarily due to being in the military and constantly on the go with deployments. Being in a TRADOC post now at Lost-in-the-Woods has pretty negated the need for one.

While gaming laptops offer mobility and ease of use, they do have drawbacks. One is that heat will become a issue over time with usage, that drastically reduces their lifespans, and there is nothing you can do about that, period. Another issue that arises also has to do with power consumption. Even plugged in, they drain battery life like you wouldn't believe.

So, if you're constantly on the go then its a easy purchase. It makes sense. But it should never be considered as a desktop replacement.

And, Holy Cow! Finally tried carrier ops in FSX! As a huge F-18 fan, I can't believe I never tried this before.


And then, OMG, installed AI Carriers2 and Javier's Nimitz.






I am totally excited about naval ops in FSX, as it's something I've missed in the other sims I've played over the last few years (a little lacking in SF2 and non-existent in DCS). I've downloaded Dino's T-45 and F-14, but haven't installed yet. Also thinking about the Virtavia A-6E.

Yeah I've been hugely impressed with the 970M. I'm in a similar situation with regards and although I have a desktop for use when I'm home on leave I have to use a laptop most of the time.

I've had nine high end laptops in the last ten years and this one is definitely the best one straight out of the box in terms of performance. The Alienware M15X I had in 2008 was about as good, but lacked in the build quality and was more expensive. I was looking at a balls out custom build that would cost about �4k (so what, best part of $6k) but to be honest I think I get much better bang for buck with this off the shelf model for nearly a third of the price.


Malibu - do a search for the Virtual Blue Angels F/A-18 for FSX. It's a really big improvement over the Acceleration Hornet. If you can't find it drop me a PM and I'll see if I can upload it to Dropbox or something.

I'd make your next payware purchase the Superbug and Tacpack, as they offer (IMHO) the best naval ops of any sim out there at the moment.

The bug is just awesome, and Tacpack features an overhauled version of AI carriers that even offers a pitching deck!

And if you want some very nice British naval aircraft check out http://www.flyingstations.com and in particular their payware Buccaneer.

I actually downloaded their stuff a while back but eventually uninstalled it because I wasn't flying the FA-18 much. I may look at it again. I have this weird thing about duplicate versions of the same aircraft, and I was kinda bummed that the FSX Blue Angels stuff installs in addition to the default Acceleration F-18's, rather than over-writing/improving the Acceleration stuff. That's just a personal preference thing, though.



One of the things I haven't bought into yet, is combat in FSX. I just feel like there are combat sims that do it better (with a "full" combat environment). Specifically, in the case of an FA-18C or E, I'd rather hold out for the Coretex F-18E for DCS. Given the amount of time I have to learn new flight sim stuff, I'd probably just be figuring out how to land the VRS Super Bug on a carrier in FSX by the time Coretex Super Bug comes out. So I'd rather wait for the whole enchilada.

For now I'm going to continue exploring freeware options. I just found a CV-10 at Sim-outhouse to land my Aircraft Factory F4U on...

I hear you, and I never really used either package for combat ops either (VRS banked too heavely on the FSX@war project, which I haven't heard any update on, but from vid I've seen around the web looks promising), but it does bring excellent Naval ops to the table in the mean time.

Also, if you could take off and land the baby bug, you can easily do the same in the Super Bug without cracking the manual. The AI carriers UI is still very intuitive, and just as in real life, the Superbugs pit has a lot of commonality with the baby bug, making the transition easier.

Plus, skills learned operating the VRS Bug will surely translate to the DCS version for Cortex.

Just picked up the A2A B377 w/ Cpt of the Ship. What fun to fly, but still learning to get the hang of it. Finally made a full flight today. Approach and landing were a little rough, but I made it. I'll take it!

Any landing you walk away from is a good one lol
