Yes. Brilliant. Essential. And so utterly new, at the time
just completely beyond the existing musical language, in
a completely original direction, the first 3 Tull albums
offered a direction at right angles to everything that
had come before. And it didn't hurt that the musicianship
was masterful. But they weren't alone in being radically
original in that short amazing period. So odd that within
another three years, music was back to a sort of average net
trajectory, and all the radical alternative possibilities had
been discarded. Probably can be laid in part on the end of
the "hands off" development policy for the FM radio format.
As soon as it was established enough to be profitable, the
avenues for extreme creativity were blocked in favour of
promotion of reliable money makers.
