throttle? i thought that was the kettle and his stylish ceramic mug.My uncle used to drive? steer? throttle and brake? coal trains in NSW , someone did the stand on the track thing one night and refused to move, predictable results. Long story short he never drove a train again. Sorry for derailing the thread btw guys On topic: On the steam page , the top seller list, it shows CloD as number 6 for me. Didn't everyone grow up wanting to be a train driver? I wonder if it's like how people that drive buses get after 20 years, in that they hate the whole passenger concept? I know it would annoy me. A little known tip, and one that drives Australians into unbridled rage at unfair currency conversion, is to append a 'country code' at the end of the Steam URL when browsing the store and whatnot. I don't think purchasing things like that is legit, but if you want a gorp at the other countries charts/prices then you can do things like this: http://store.steampowered.com/?cc=ukhttp://store.steampowered.com/?cc=au (Second warning, these are priced in US dollars!) http://store.steampowered.com/?cc=usetc.

2. That the US release doesn`t help much is even not surprising. No offense, but no Mustang and no P-47. `nuff said. IL-2 did just fine with only the Eastern Front for quite a while. P-51s and P-47s do not automatically guarantee successful sales.

Its good to see A10 getting support, I haven't got it (marriage wouldn't survive the time needed to learn it) but everyone I've spoken to raves on it.
Surely nobody is surprised about CoD ? People use the interweb these days and all you have to do is google the title and within about .001 seconds you are reading the verbal equivelent of molten lava wherever you go. Is it deserved ? yes and no. Does it kill off potential sales - abso-blummin-lutely.

I dont understand this "we should be quiet and not tell the truth about CLOD, it hurts sales and we want them to do well, so we can get more stuff" The buck starts and stops with them. If their product is good enough and deserves to succeed it will, if they make a unfinished sim and then act the way they are doing(banana forum)with communication(IMO)then im telling it as it is. What it seems your asking for is us to lie to people to get more cash for them so they MIGHT make more unfinished and broken sims, sorry not my style. If CLOD was fantastic i would be shouting from the roof tops in every forum i could. As it is im telling the truth in two.
When IL2 was released it wasn't perfect and had some missing features, but the core sim worked, and worked very well. when the going got tough on the forums Oleg didn't stop communicating and start posting vids of banjo music.
Oleg has gone, he went over a year ago. and it looks like some a few of the team went with him or left at the same time.
This is Luthier's baby and his team, hes leading and making the development decisions not Oleg and people need to remember that.

Not wanting to personally attack the developer but having only recently purchased Cliffs of Dover i do feel more than a little cheated, I have followed the development on the 1C forums and really had faith in Oleg and i admit i openly dismissed any critics during that time, I had blind faith, I really believed that they were holding back showing us all the great things so we would get the wow factor upon release. Even after reading all the posts after release i still refused to believe it could be so bad so i purchased it, and now i feel such a fool, I was totally wrong to trust in Oleg and Luthier, my own fault yes my eyes were wide open but i still feel very conned. Ive recently joined this forum because of the clampdown on saying anything negative over at 1c i really hope Simhq is not going the same way.

Clinker, i remember fighting with people on the forums about the same thing, and even though others(tree-now banned)and myself was saying things dont seem right about the stuff we was seeing, no FSAA,no vids, no sound and the Kiev show shambles with CLOD grinding to a halt because of only 2GIG of ram bollox.
I also remember arguing with Oleg about the terrain, i posted alot of the same shots ive done here in the terrain thread and i got shot to pieces because of it "Oleg knows best, leave him alone, its a WIP, its a placeholder blah blah blah".
I hoped inside YOU and others were right and at release Oleg would unveil a masterpiece, because i had the same trust and belief you did, He didn't.

Ah yes Tree, I had a few run ins with him, So 1c finally silenced him, I hate to say it but what he was saying pretty much turned out that way, well lets just hope that Luthier proves everyone wrong and fixes this game and soon.

There is nothing ALL of us here would like more than to see Luthier release a patch that shuts us "moaners, whiners and haters" up.
But i think from now on there is not the same trust and belief, and more of "lets wait and see or il believe it when i see it"
PM sent Clinker.

What is that Tropico thing, is that even a simulation? - Anyway, I don't think the showing of Il-2 CoD in that list is anywhere near bad. The Sims, ehhh, yeah, that one is going to sell more, that's obvious. A car sim and a football manager sim higher up in the list aren't surprising either. As for the train? - WTF! is all I can say, I guess there is a whole big population of train anoraks out there that I didn't know about... Anyway, I think the showing of CoD isn't half bad, based on that screenie. I hope they'll be fixing a lot of the broken stuff over the coming months, and then it might be selling steadily. Il-2 Classic lived on steady sales and not on a huge initial surge, as many other games. I think longevity plays a much bigger role for flight sims, because they are niche products, and rely much more on a steady influx of simmers over time than on big advertising campaigns and a quick burst of sales. FPS's basically have to do all their earnings in a few months before the next title comes out... - That's not the case for flight sims.

True Frey, IL2 was a slow burner for sure. We need CLOD to be the same.
If they can fix the sound, add CO-OPs(the future is CO-OPs for online wars just like IL2) and make better GUI for MP very soon, then its much more playable and they will have more time to fix most of the other stuff in the long term.
IMO we need something like hyperlobby, a place to gather and run missions(that's why CO-OPS are need so bad).

I dont think the question is whether the devs/publisher *want* the game fixed and improved - of course they do - it is a question of whether they *able* to fix and improve it, in both the short and long term. This will have an ongoing affect on sales figures.
If, as I suspect, Oleg is long gone and perhaps some coders also, then new coders will need time to familiarise thermselves with the code-base and libraries, and unravel some of its mysteries. It depends on the abilities of the new guy/s and the transparency of the code and efficacy of the code and de-buggers.
Either way, in purely commercial terms I'd say the 'de-buggers' haven't got long, even though the more detailed flight-sims tend to be slow-burn as Freycinet says. But even they are subject to sales stats, curves and charts, and the long, beady eye of the overhead projector beam (bean-counters at the back).
I've been part of a dev house with a long-standing code-base (soem parts went back 8 years). Chief coders left, new guys came in, could not make head nor tail...core routines had to be re-written..took months/years.
Again, pure speculation, but not unreasonable. Probably not that bad in this case, but serious code analysis takes weeks/months, even before any re-writes can start. Then the testing etc.
Recent third-party prototype mods show potential of the landscape graphics engine...which suggests it can be modded without too much bother, so there's hope yet.

Ben Agreed mate, thats why it looks to me like the patches so far are more tinkering instead of fixing and adding.

Initial sales must of not been too bad, the next expansion as we know has been given the green light and Luthier publically stated that they have the support from the higher-ups even after the disasterous launch. How well they do with the long-term sales of Cliffs of Dover and the sales of future titles is up to them. I can tell you now that I'm not even considering buying the next game in the series at this stage and I haven't been recommending the game to friends. I'm not stubborn though, if I see the game gets fixed and we get a flight sim at a level of quality that is expected in this day and age I'll do the opposite.
