There was not the hype attached to RoF as to this, nor the expectation, not the history. It's an unfair comparison in many ways, and you can't just peer through that prism and see the same colours as this and say it will come good, because that did. Well, you cna, but living on a wing and a prayer....
This update is the most depressing I have heard. When full-screen counts as good reportable news, you know you are in real trouble.
Where is the news of dynamic campaign/weather? Changed ground palettes and art-work? Or hints of a time-table for these things?
Seems like crumbs thrown from the table to me. Where's the meat?

SimHQ should set up a forum for this RoF, it sounds amazing. People who prefer speeds less than 30 mph could all gather there and compare payed compasses in a dark quiet room or something.

If full screen is giving this thing that much trouble. Triple Screen Gaming frightens me.
Ahh CLOD never in the history of Simming has so much been promised and so little given.
However I want to thank Team Fusion for keeping the Dream Alive.

Seeing as your post is dripping with sarcasm I'm not entirely sure that you don't know about this already, but: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/forums/113/1/Rise_of_Flight_The_First_Great.htmle: it is rather good, in all honesty - paid content and all.

Man, I regret writing that already. I'm such an ass. I guess all I'm trying to get across is that for COD it is still quite early days, and that despite other people's opinions, what I have today I actually enjoy playing. I enjoy WWII era aviations, but if I start denigrating other sims (even just for laughs) then it's basically the first step on the path to troll-hood. The next step below that is putting funny animated icons in and bad English - I think we all can agree, that's not a happy place to be. RoF is good, WoP is good, BoB WoV is good, CoD is good for me, but will hopefully do better. Apologies Mich, if offended.

Well done Frog, dont get much of that around here. Anyway back to the patch, it does just stun me that full screen is a problem, surley it should of been sorted out as one of the first things YEARS ago? Looking forward to the patch, lets hope they have been working on the gameplay probs too.

I've never heard reports the CoD would have a dynamic campaign by the developers (indeed - I've only heard some reports for the 2005 SoW). A dynamic campaign and modified textures will both be provided by the 3rd party over the coming months (I consider both to be inevitable). The dynamic weather was mentioned as possibly arriving with the next product - I'd estimate two years, given the issues we're seeing in the initial release). I'd say new terrain textures within six months, a dynamic campaign generator in eight to eleven months, and a new weather module in about twenty-four months. Of course, these are just hints at a time-table, invented by myself, based on how long it took for similar things to be developed for Lomac/RoF/Il-2. If I were a betting man... As for "meat" in the form of new features and aircraft - that'll probably have to wait until after the holiday. They've probably been working extremely hard for a couple of months prior to release (and now for a couple of months after). That's my suspicion anyway. However, I still wouldn't be surprised to see an MG-FF/M.

it`s going to lead to a better product, Kadin. And as said, it`s not about whining, I do appreciate the efforts 1C are making to improve the game. And the bar is set high - it is ROF. Like the girlfriend/wife improvement...right?

Everyone who brings up ROF says "well it wasn't released well and now it's great" insinuating that COD will just develop and be that good one day. The problem is they are two completely different development projects and published two completely different ways. One is a major single release. The other is a game that was built on continually updated features, future progress, new campaigns, new content (paid and upaid) etc. Ubisoft isn't going to keep paying Luthier and his team to improve an already released product. Once the game is considered largely playable, that'll be it. ROF is completely different and ongoing past just engine fixes. It's depressing in a way. Even if COD is 100% playable, it's still lacking so much.

I might fork out for ROF. Seems to be getting good reviews lately. I recently read it was amazing. Does it have 109's yet? I too am tempted by it, but need to muster the courage to get into all that early kite stuff - the era has never appealed. It's never appealed to me either. The planes are slow, stall super easy, don't have alot of instrumentation etc. But the dogfights in ROF are just that good, so are the flight models. I've found myself lost in the game many times. Hopefully the campaign is out soon as that will make the game even better. But the fights in ROF just require so much more effort that it's a very rewarding game. Can't say enough good about it even though i was never remotely into WW1.

I have ROF and love it for what it is but it is very limited in scope. I have COD and love it also and find I am enjoying the more complex engine stuff and FMB toys way more than I do ROF's overly complex mission editor and simple planes and management. For real depth I think COD has it.

Reliance on Steam points towards that quite strongly I think. In some ways the success of RoF has validated the 'pay for what interests you' business model rather than the 'IL Pacific Fighters, etc etc' bigger expansion packs way that IL2 dev over the years was paid by. CoD being an initial weak release, but then paying for more maps, planes, field kits is something that RoF has led the way on - which is what we want, right?

I've been playing the demo for the past few days while CoD gets more CPR and I must say online at least it's been a blast. only the spad to play with in the demo mode but I've managed to chew up a few unwary punters with it's speed and firepower. I especially like the way the tracers are modelled, a world away from the star wars of CoD and more in keeping with how I imagine tracers would look. I might fork out for ROF. Seems to be getting good reviews lately.

Can't say enough good about it even though i was never remotely into WW1. One combat sim is very similar to another in terms of the mechanics. In RoF you are dealing with slower planes and bases close to the front line than CoD but the gameplay is the same - you enemy has the same limitations as you have. Similarly with modern air combat. To me WW1 combat is just as exciting and demanding as WW2 and later combat. The only difference is how is it represented in the game itself, whether there is a dynamic campaign, how well the aerodynamcis are recreated, how damage is handled, the opposing AI, and how well your wingmen work with you. For me CoD is well behind RoF in all of these aspects. Certainly death can come just as quickly in WW1 combat as in other types. I especially like the ricochets in RoF and the bomb blasts are immense, also trying to make it back to base and land when you are half dead is great fun. The best planes for me are the bombers and the Sopwith Pup. But I am looking forward to the Bristol Fighter as well when it arrives.

Oleg was one of the pioneers of the continual upgrade model. Not only did he release several free upgrades and patches over several years, but there was a full decade of releasing new products which upgraded the engine (and content) - all the while under the supervision of UBI. IMHO, the only difference is that RoF has been charging for downloads, rather than issuing upgrade DVDs. If you've followed Il-2 from its inception you should realise that your point goes against everything that has happened in the past.

Why do people who hate this sim still hang around like hungry sharks at this forum? What is the fascination? Do they secretly love the sim but cannot make themselves admit it? What a sad life do you have if you have nothing better to do than sit 24 hours a day in front of your computer to sit and moan about a program you don't like? What losers.

Well, Because of CloD's poor performance and largely broken, um, everything, I ended up buying ROF:ICE last week and have been having an incredible time with it.
So yeah, chalk me up as a ROF customer because of CloD.
