What comes up with no data?

If I connect to my usenet server (news.isp.com) with an appropiate newsgroup reader, one that can handle binaries, and I look into said newsgroup I see my posting of earlier today. Just started the remainder of the upload as announced.

It could be that your ISP doesn't mirror that specific newsgroup. If more people have the same problems I could post them in a newsgroup which is more satisfactory.

Just as an ISP provides you with servers for incoming and outgoing e-mail, most isp's also have a usenetserver. To find the server name look at the support pages of your ISP.

Usenet or newsservers or also called discussiongroups are the third base of internet back from the old days. We had e-mail, www and usenet. (now we have all these peer 2 peer and other direct ip tools as well)

It's normally not a case of ISP's blocking newsgroups, more a case of ISP's not hosting newsgroups as it's a big drain on bandwidth.

Cheers

True..

But I have never had an ISP which didn't have a usenetserver. Performance does differ greatly though.. My previous cabe ISP had a retention of 20 hours max on all binary groups, and my current one has 10 days or so.. It uses Supernews .

Hi Koriel

Most UK ISP's dont host the binary newsgroups. My ISP (NTL) does but their server is next to useless 90% of the time. 10 day retention of binary groups? Jeez, you get that free or do you pay extra?

Cheers

I pay 65 euro ( 45.46 pounds) per month for an ADSl connction 8mbit download / 1mbit upload ( 820k/86k max i've seen sofar) This is with Demon.nl, and Demon has outsourced their usenet to Supernews. I had to sign a 1 year contract and they gave me an ethernet modem / router for free and waived the entry fee.. Sofar the best deal for a high quality broadband connection in Holland.

And this usenet is awesome.. Not that I would ever dream of doing it, but i _could_ be downloading lomac in 2 days when it's out in the US, while I am waiting for my copy which I ordered thru gameplay.co.uk.

And if you can't get a hold of a good usenet provider, just go to a public one.. News-service is one a buddy of mine uses, he says they're pretty good, and there's Supernews as well, as many others.. so for day 5 pounds per month you could have good usenetaccess as well
