Ok so am a simple green grass limey, but I am sure that in base ball the crowd is a fair distance from the pitch. I also put to you that the bat hits the ball and the ball goes flying. Now given these things how on earth does the bat end up flying into the crowd?

Sometimes the bat flies out of the batter's hand. It isn't that far from the stands to the field believe it or not, especially in the older, more intimate parks.
