Let us not under-estimate Galland's attribution of "luck" in surviving combat. Knowing you will not be penalized the "ultimate price" emboldens the virtual pilot. Don't be so hard on yourself.
Was just flying, while you writng that, a He-162c over Kurland, fun little camapign called Baltic Sparrows. Been dying alot, I got sick of restarting, so I just take the deaths now, just to finish it. I've died like 11 times since my fifth restart! That 162 doesn't like getting slow on final approach.
Finally got a "piece of cake" mission. Night intercept of unescorted Douglas transports. So I pushed my luck. Attacked them from the rear at 500kph to 600kph. One burst,
Close In, and they just flew apart , and me right thru the debris. Wings and engines flying everywhere.
Me? I got seven I think, and not a scratch. Ran out of ammo, there was one left.
