Tried it in a Single Mission, but . . . instant DTD.

Athlon XP 1800+
GA-7VTXE (VIA KT266A AGP set, BIOS v.F9A)
512MB DDR RAM
GeForce 3 Ti200 (Detonator 30.82)
Windows XP HE
DirectX 8.2 (comes with CFS 3)
1280x1040

Hoi There!

Well if this 512X512 is possible we will only have to resize our planes to 512X512 or to be exactly precise tio that "other" sim's size and voila it's skins can be used in EAW without jerking off valuable time...

So it only works on my machine? OK. Thanks to all who tested it. I had to re-test mine again just to make sure I didn't dream it last night. It still works, although, I get the same problem as Von Beerhofen, that it CTD's when you go to fly it on a second mission.

I hear you Alessandro. It seems that this idea is limited to a few 3d cards, which has some major implications. I now know exactly what Salty was talking about.

Well, Von Beerhofen - it can't be said that we didn't try. Where to go next is the question...... I guess Rome wasn't built in a day.

Full steam ahead for all HR .3dz wizards!

If I may chime in from the peanut gallery...

I think Alessandro is right about the video cards. Gunship supports larger pcx skins up to the limit of the user's video card. This is nice, but only if the majority of users can enjoy it. (hmm. I wonder if the vid card manufacturers offer driver upgrades for this issue?)

But there's an important point that I think is worth repeating: simply taking an existing 256x256 PCX and re-sizing it to 512x512 does not produce a hires or more detailed skin. Chompy chose a great way to illustrate his findings, because if you look closely, you can see that the new stripes have finer detail than the original 256x256, however the rest of the skin looks exactly the same.

I've spent a fair amount of time trying to get the formerly unflyable helos in GS (which all use a single 256x200 pcx), to look as great as the flyable ones, (which generally use 2-5 pcx's per skin). I thought the 512x512 skin would do it, but I found that only works if they are completely repainted at the 512x512 size. (Which is how I suspect alot of these skins were originally painted: as much larger images, then shrunk to 256x256. Hmmm. Wonder where all the originals are?) I'm sure various government agencies have the software to enlarge and enhance the 256x256 to 512x512 quality images, but I sure don't. I'm open to suggestions on this issue. There are alot of folks over here that are good enough to repaint these birds from scratch, and I now have a whole new appreciation for the skill involved. Because I ain't got it!

So this may be an argument for the multiple 3DZ approach you guys (Chompy?) came up with. That's basically how it's done in GS.

Anyway, good luck with all this. Clever crew hereabouts...

Hmmm, I wonder, what's going on here...
We still have to find out why it is working on some machines and on some others not...

BTW: Didn't Chris Coons tell us, that the texture size limitation to 256x256 is set in the exe???

Actually the pcx file that Chompy used was painted at 512x512 resolution. You are correct in assuming that these skins were painted at a higher resolution and then shrunk down to 256x256. I've been doing that for some time now. I did the high res Mustang skin at a 1024x1024 resolution. I then reduced that down to 512x512 size, cut and pasted parts of the skin onto a 256x256 size pcx file, all of the skin spread across 6 pcx files. This is how you overcome the 256x256 limitation and still get a higher resolution look. The trick is getting the 3dz files to fit this altogether.

I have yet to see the effect of UHR with settigns set at low res LOL

im going to concentrate on using this on terrain files?
Vonbeer did the trees, but what about 512X512 terrain files?
then EAW will kick IL2's circa 2001-02 graphics

TNT2, tested up to 1280x960 (at 1280x1200 EAW refuse to start).

The P-51D CRASH in the game even if only viewed from outside, but can be viewed in the "view objets" option ! ! !
