I e-mailed the creator of the e-Voodoo glide wrapper last week and he is still working on the Red Baron 3D support. He has mailed me a working version yesterday! I haven tried it since I have a Voodoo card, but if any one would like to try it I can mail it to you.

Mahoney, who kindly sent the e-voodoo guy a RB CD so he could work on the wrapper for us,recieved the latest incarnation about a week ago.I tested it and didn't get very good results.A lot of the graphics are missing and the FPS was between 5-10,which ain't good.
Please remember this is a work in progress and is a long way from finished.I'd wait until he has got a bit further with it.

eVoodoo XP 3.1 is out!

Quote
’ Sunday, 19 May 2002
New release of eVoodoo XP that includes two glide wrapper versions, Glide2 version and Glide3 version.

eVoodoo 2.2 includes support for new PC games compatibles with 3Dfx cards. As games that use propietary texture management based on 3DF files. Other game that now runs at 100% is Red Baron 3D after I modify paletted textures core and speedup framebvuffer routines.

eVoodoo 3.1 now can run games as FIFA, NBA Live, Test Drive 5, and starts to work with Lewpy plugin fot PSEmu Pro, althought still have some problems with textures. In Glide64 some problems with color combiners have been corrected and flashing problem have been fixed.

Finally in eVoodoo Control Panel has been added an utility to patch Electronic Arts games for use them with eVoodoo. ’

End Quote

Download it at http://evoodoo.emulation64.com/ and let us know how it works.

I got Salvadore Dali Rb3D also on my Radeon 8500. Through it's sheer processing power
I was able to double the FPS that Brigstock
was able to get. 4-6FPS Weee hooo

By the time the ATI R600 gets here it's will
be flyable offline. I think I'll have to
wait for the R900 for online use

I tried the newer eVoodoo XP 3.2. Part of the terrain is visible now, together with the cockpit and the river. Framerate is still a problem and the horizon is missing. But still an improvement. (Athlon 500, GeForce 2 GTS)

I just tried 3.2 version and it looks great just like the real game on my end. But problem is frame rate. I'm getting about 1 fps to 4 fps. Hardly playable but it looks good.
Edit..... Well after playing around a little more I found out It aint that good.

Different Voodoo Cards require different drivers.........This is logical.

The driver for my 4500 will not work properly for your Voodoo II, for example.

Further, there are different platforms, me on Windows XP, you or someone else on Win98SE.

When hunting for drivers that are compatable with XP, for example, I've found very few.

I think their problem is that they are trying to make "one size fits all", and such an action won't work.

They will need drivers that are platform & card specific in order to succeed at this.

I have yet to find a set of Voodoo tools that work on XP, and that is frustrating, but at least the drivers do.

For this venture, the tools arent nessesary, so that's one less hurdle to jump over. However, it would be nice if something was in the settings tab of Windows.......Especially the "Limit Texture to 2 meg" option.

If they would release platform & card specific sets, they will do better.

For XP with a Voodoo 3 or higher, I recommend using the Dozer Drivers as a base.

For Win9x with Voodoo 3 or higher, I recommend Omega Drivers.

For Voodoo 2 drivers, I'd have to check. I don't remember seeing V2 drivers for XP, but I might be mistaken on that.

As you can see, the immulator needs to be specific.

I think I might know of a more productive way........Contact Raedeon, and see if they would be willing to make a card that has Glide in addition to the other formats.

This will boost Raedeon's customer base & bring in additional income they might not normally have gotten.

nVidia has made it abundantly clear they have no intention of helping the THOUSANDS of glide people out there, so their competitor, Raedeon, is our best shot.

Not sure that this is possible. nVidia owns 3dfx and Glide now. I imagine there are legal restrictions that would prevent ATI from introducing Glide support. If ATI did (and had no restrictions) they would almost definitely end up being trumped by nVidia, because nVidia with its ownership of the 3dfx intellectual property and development tools could easily do the same and better should they need to. The time to do Glide support to gain market share was two years ago. I'm not saying it wouldn't be nice, but there is little economic incentive for ATI, while nVidia has already clearly illustrated their disdain by doing nothing to support technology they purchased.

Something about this whole nVidia/3dfx thing smells........

First, they weren't competitors, since Glide was a different format than what nVidia used.

Second, why buy out a company & not use what they had to offer?

They both produced graphics cards, and most people only have one in their system... that pretty much makes them competitors . 3dfx cards do OpenGL and D3D as well as Glide; even if they didn't, they would be competing for developer allegiance to their respective technologies.

I'm sure they looked at the technology 3dfx had researched, but the primary reason was clearly to remove 3dfx from the market place. As for Glide - by the time nVidia bought 3dfx, developers had nearly all moved on to OpenGL or Direct3D. Why support something so few people need? Even most Glide games supported one of the other two as well. Glide's a dead technology, from a money making point of view.

Here is another glide wrapper.

It almost works perfect. Almost!! anyway its playable FPS wise. There are a few glitches here and there. Download the program and put the glide2x.dll in your RB3D folder. Its not the proper way to use the program but its the only way I could get it to work.

The whole Glide thing should eb a reminder to us all .... manufacturers are in business for profit, not for our benefit.

If Quake had been designed for Glide... now that would have been different!

Nvidia killed Glide stone dead ... and look at how many of us now have Nvidia based cards ... RB3D is probably one of the few areas where a Glide based game is still alive and thriving ... which makes fro a small market in terms of R&D costs etc.

Our best bet is for a working Glide wrapper ... or for someone to get access to the code and re-write RB3D to run in OpenGL! Now wouldn't that be nice!!!

I think it's safe to say RB wasn't the only Glide-based game that got stiffed by nVidia's dirty underhanded tricks.

It'd be nice if Raedeon would throw us a bone.......Word of mouth is still the best advertizing!

Works great, I get about 25+ frames... Even though i have a crappy Rage 128 vid card.

You were right about all the glitches tho, but most are minor. At low altitudes ( 100ft and below ) the terrain textured go all blue. And the menue has no text ( ex: end mission, restart, abort ect. )

But the rest is good.

beats the .5 - 3 fps with other wrappers.

Care to explain how you got it working. The 3.25 download only contains the Glide3x.dll but from my understanding the Glide2x.dll is the one required for RB3D.

no I just left it as is ie 3x and it worked.dont ask me the how and why.as mentioned earlier both the glidos and this dll work for me.the glidos dll actually looks marginally better i thought but unfortunately the terrain has major graphic glitches("green outs")off and on,not only at low altitude as stated by someone else.speed wise both are fine.
My system-xp home on xp1800 GF364megDDR and 512 meg DDRmemory(xp is a pest having to delete the preferences file before each time the game is played to get sound but otherwise it runs well)

That can't be.........RB doesn't recognize a 3X file, only a 2X.

Maybe if you tell us what you did to the 2X file, that might help us out.......

A new version of the Glide2x.dll has been released at http://www.glidos.net/baron.html
It fixes the worst graphical problems.

I've been testing the glidos DLL on my machine,W2K,XP1800,64 meg GF2 MX400 and using fraps frame counter I've been getting upto 130 in FPS in a completely standard game @ 800x600.
There have been a few transparency problems but all in all this is startling stuff!!

WOW!

It works!

I was getting some slowdown on my PC ... Duron 700, GF2MX 32Mb Win98 320Mb RAM. But that was at 800x600 full detail on everything. I guess the wrapper is having to work hard to translate everything!

Still... I forgot how nice the game could look. Proper clouds, distance fog ... I had forgotten how nice this game looked under Glide

With a little more optimisation, this is going to be the best thing to happen to RB for years!!!! It is also good to see that the guys behind Glidos were so willing to pitch in and tweak the thing great stuff

Additional update ...

After 'forcing' myslef to test RB extensively .... I pinned down the cause of the slowdown.

It was the sunglare

Turned it off, and the stuttering went away.

You still get slightly screwed up interface screens, and the windscreens are black!!! but everything else works perfectly now. FR's are good for me, and the thing looks good ( as those screenies show )

It is playable as it stands, and if the Glidos guys can sort out the transparency issue, it will be perfect.

Tailgunner, thanks for the tip with the sunglare.

Well it actually works here too apart from an issue with transparencies and sunglare.
On my system I can´t get the messages text, but the indicator (Alt-I) and the Frame counter (Alt-F) works.
With a few tweaks this would be a major breakthrough in simming

Here is my 2 cents worth.

I started RB on my GeForce Ti4600 with the 2 glide files in RB directory.

looks exactly the same as it did running on my Voodoo 5500.AMAZING!

I see no visual anomalities other than a dark in flight map.I can certainly live with that.

Great job!Never thought I would see it.

A bonus is that my music plays with the Nivida card but was grainy and strained with the VooDoo card.

I tried to force RB to run maximized but it changes over to a normal window at times and the title:Red Baron 3 D line is visible at the top.

If anyone knows how to kill this I would appreciate it if you could clue me in.

I'd say it's a combination of factors, actually. In fact, it seems to react differently in each situation.........I was expecting this.

As I stated earlier, a "one size fits all" solution will be difficult, but it's not impossible.

The current 2X seems to like the Geoforce 4 series cards the best, run on Windows 95/98.

(I think I got that right.)

I have a GF4 TI4600, the wrapper works well except it does not allow the selection of 1024x768 in-game resolution and the gun site is blocked in the padlock view after a few switches between 2-D and padlock view. Tried ROTD1D wothout applying any fixes, mission 1 always lockup hard as soon as the bombers appear. It works fine with the retail RB3D version. Any idea?

I am running the ROTJD without problems on Windows 98.

You might try applying the fixes for the various planes.I think there are 4 of them.

I seem to be dropping to desktop as I finish each mission and try to move on to the next.

Anyone else seeing this?(I have my Desktop at 1024x768)

Additional test result ....

DON'T GET WOUNDED!!!!

The 'red' overlay that tells you you have taken a nasty hit drops the FR's into slideshow territory.

It looks as though the wrapper has 2 areas it struggles...

1) Transparencies on the cockpit view

2) Any 'transparent' overlay the game puts over the screen. This was noticable with the sun glare, and more so with the red screen

There is also a minor texture flicker effect when you view the plane from external on the ground ... you can see a few flickering polygons behind the plane. Don't really call that a problem though.

Running on a GF2MX ( old 32 Mb version ) under Win98SE.

This is about all I can find that doesn't work well

Athlon 64 3000 ( S939)
1024Mb DDR 400 (Don't leave home without it)
GeForce 6800GT
Abit AV8 Pro
