Yes it is worth $40. Can't vouch for online play yet, haven't tried it (also have broadband so I can't help you with the 56K question...)

Truth is its worth 5 times as much, there will not be a game like it for a very long time. And $40 is very cheap for a game of this magnetude.

KILO, Im 100% sure that your will find it worth it, even with Single Player And don't forget, there are patches coming out from Bohema, so cheer up, u might end up getting less than 50 ping in the future ------------------ I've never seen skies that look this realistic! $40 bucks....HELL NO....my friend has the game, i run it at my house cracked. Its ok, but i personally would never buy it. The helo and tank parts are completely ARCADE, and its an ok shooter. If you want a good infantry sim, go with Ghost Recon. As for multiplayer, yeah, its gonna take a lot of bandwidth, was playin with my friend over IP, we both have DSL, and it was still laggy (though that was his fault, he only has 96MB of RAM, the game dont run good at his house in single player lol).......

Excuse me FlyDude, but GhostRecon, is not even close with OFP, in term of simulating freedom of action and space limitations. Secondly, OFP is no a shooter, its a tactical simulation of infatry grunt, and yes u can't run with speeds of 100 km/h and jump 5 meters up. Thirdly, OFP has a developers' devotion and creativity in it, whereas GR is just a unsignificant upgrade for Roguer Spear. And lastly, IMO if one up to "as close as it gets" experince I would stick with OFP. My 2 cents ------------------ I've never seen skies that look this realistic! Except for real skies, of course. OFP is more then worth it You might want to try and get the gold edition OFP, that has the Red Hammer add-on pack with it I shouldn't worry about playing Online with 56k. I am doing the same and I don't get any more lag then what I do in any other game (Which includes Flights Sims, Rogue Spear etc) and that is very little. Don't listen to FLYdude, I have found the exact opposite to what he has said. And as it is stated, the game is an Infantry Sim. But the Tanks and aircraft give you a level of freedom unheard of in other games, and they are allot of fun. Besides if you want a tank sim, go buy a tank sim, if you want a flight sim, go buy a flight Sim. If you want them all in one package get OFP Another point, I don't see the use of comparing OFP to Ghost Recon. Why? Well one is designed to simulate all out war (OFP) and one is more toward terrorism and small battles. And one is the beginning of a whole new chapter in Game Play technology (OFP), one is a tarted up version of old technologies To play OFP you may want to have a fairly powerful rig, mine is OK for OFP, but any lower and it might not be worth it. I am running: P3 650 Mhz 328 mb ram ATi Rage 128 Xpert 2000 32MB and I can get it to run quite well. It would also be good if your Graphics Card uses Glide. My ATi don't support it so I am stuck with DirectX, my friend has OFP and his Voodoo Glides, and it looks far better then mine Nonetheless OFP is a great game, and has allot of potential in it, as soon as BIS release the SDK allot of good Mods will be coming out. And BIS have worked (and are still working) hard with patches, etc. to improve the game. You won't be disappointed! [This message has been edited by BUTCHER (edited 12-29-2001).]

this game is worth all of that $40. I haven't played a flight sim since I purchased OFP. This is a ground sim so the helo and plane remark should go out the window. BIS just threw those in to add to the game. As far as GR, go ahead and read these 2 threads in the GR forum. 1 I started and another is from a review by SIMHQ. OFP is hands above GR. Detail might be better in GR but that is due to the map size. OFP has a huge map compared to GR so they couldn't put in as much detail. http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/sims/boards/bbs/Forum75/HTML/000063.html http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/sims/boards/bbs/Forum75/HTML/000053.html As far as online play, I feel this is OFP's selling point. Flydude's friend must have line issues because our squad has been playing this sim online direct IP w/ cable and have had as many as 9 guys on at once. One saw lag with the BETA patches. Just look at the forum activity of the 2 rooms. OFP is solely for 1 game and has almost 6200 posts where all the Rainbow series games together don't even equal 450. The add ons that BIS and all the 3rd party groups out there are top notch. Not sure what GR add ons are. We have a few guys in our squad that have both and most feel OFP is the better purchase if you had to buy 1 game. Look for GR in the bargain bin If your looking for a specops game than GR is more your cup of tea, if your looking for a soldier sim that go w/ OFP. Kilo, come to the dark side and buy OFP ------------------ TG out Negative Ghostrider, the pattern is full Gone, but not forgotten Wings of Fury my photos

ok.....so....it depends on what you like. its an ok shooter (opinion), it does allow you to do a lot more stuff then just a shooter game (Humvees understeer severly). and the islands are big and you can go anywhere (Humvee fell of a mountain and broke a tree, then i drove away in it). But a simulation, IT IS NOT. it does attempt to simulate warfare conditions, and squad tactics. its ok at that. but the helos and tanks r completely ARCADE. also, i noticed some recoil.....but......um.....lets just say.....not sufficent amounts, it screams NOVALOGIC!!!! all over it. so, in conclusion , if you want to play a GAME where you can do anything...sure buy it.......if you want a tactical squad simulation.....get Ghost Recon (which does carry some elements from Rogue Spear.....and that IS A GOOD THING )........one more thing KILO. dont ask is a game good on a message board about that game, cause only ppl that like that game come here (except me lol)

Well after waiting years for a game that combines flight as well as ground forces, I thought OFP would be the game to end my search. I was wrong.. While the Infantry side of it is pretty good, the Vehicle and Airframe side is seriously seriously lacking. But there is no other game out there that gives the option to do all of it. And that point there makes it worth $40 bucks for those who want everything in one game.
After helping the makers of Steel Beasts since its inception, I can honestly say they have done a tremendous job recreating modern Main Battle Tanks and armor tactics. So what OFP lacks in vehicle opions Steel beasts makes up for it. Ofp has the advantage over SB because it has airframes and playable infantry.
Just depends on what you want for your money. If you want it all, OFP cant be beat and wont be beat for a very long time. If you only want one part of a sim to be great, then there are other choices. But remember, OFP is not a sim, its a game and does a fine job providing all around fun. $25-$30 bucks maybe, but $40-$45 bucks maybe a little bit much. Still, I enjoy the game and would TRULY enjoy it if I could find some good players which in my opinion makes almost any game great...

Hey flydude. Let's see you take ammo off a dead comrade or, if the mission calls for taking out a tank, In GR, If the guy with the ATA dies, so does your mission. IN OFP, If the guy with the LAW dies I just go over and pick up the LAW and continue the mission. Keep GR and I'll play OFP.

BTW, OFP isn't a flight sim, and isn't a tank sim. If anybody thinks Bohemia was trying to make a super realistic tank or plane sim, you are seriously missing the point of the game. It is an Infantry simulator, the helos and armour is there because it is an integral part of the modern battlefield, and the game would be incomplete without them.

BTW, for my opinion on OFP, i feel it is extremly realistc. No recoil? bah take an M60 and fire at a guy standing up and tell me there's no recoil in OFP. The last hour i set up a really cool scenario where i have to defend a heavily fortified area with fences and barbed wire and sandbags and everything against 3 squads of infantry 2 BMPs, and some supporting vehicles. All i had defending was about 6 M60ers, 1 officer, 2 M2s and Me with a M16 and a LAW. Well the first squad of 9 russian soldiers attacked my defenced only to be slaugterd by m60s, the BMPs came after this taking out both my M2s before i was able to LAW them. Next I just noticed in time 2 squads simultaniuously flanking us, 9 soldiers to the left 9 soldiers to the right. Well I started firing and the M60s followed, i watched from my sandbags as most of the defenders were taken out but there were 2 m60ers left, suddenly an eerie silence fell over my base and i came out of my defences and took a look around and saw russian bodies and trucks and BMPs littered dead and lifeless all over the battlefield. Now tell me that isn't realistic? The bottom line is it's excellent for infantry combat, the Tanks and Vehiciles and air units are there for kicks but they're fun. It's a great game and i spend a little bit of my daily simming in it. For $40 you can't go wrong. ------------------ ~VIPER OUT Viper's Flanker Page

Viper, Do you have the RH campaign yet? There's a mission called "Alamo" that is basically exactly what you're describing, except you're on the Russian side and there's only 6 of you. The Jedi Master

Flydude, if this is a place where only dudes who like OPF hand out then why are you here? You stole the game, say it sucks/or do not really like it's arcadish form so then go to GR and praise how much you like it but as everything in life envy rules your mind.

um.......yeah i cracked it.........the "FADE" protection is just a bunch of bullshit......the security prog on the CD is called "SafeCD" and i cracked that mother****er. gameplay is not degrading. i didnt say there was no recoil at all. never tried the M60, M16 is a little......dunno....well, it wasnt at full auto...i guess its not that bad.....lol....i would also like to mention......GR is not completely a inf. sim. they r a little more spec ops. they dont operate in as big groups as dudes in OFP........."The Ghosts" r inbetween the rangers, delta, seals, and reg US infantry, also contain elements of SAS, GIGN, and GSG-9 one thing i hate about GR is that there is no damn G36.......how can u have a good shooter without a G36 for cryin out loud......A FRIEKIN G36.........

hehe... 1. Yes, we got G36 in OFP and it still an "OK" shooter in ur eyes? 2. Im happy, that you are happy you've been able to crack it...although I wouldn't scream outloud these kind of things. 3. If you don't mind, I would drop my 2 cents on ur statement: Originally posted by FLYdude: ...they r a little more spec ops. they dont operate in as big groups as dudes in OFP... Well, thats true, they don't go in big numbers, but then in Real life, they don't engage the enemy either...if u have a specops guyz on the ground, it is mainly becouse they are there to collect intellegence and details on whatever, and if they need to go in and take something or somebody out, then they call in 101st airbone or 82 airbone. They land in force and numbers thats allows to complete objective with less casulties and more efficency. Therefore, I wouldn't bet on 1 to 100 ratio to be realistic in GR. I guess "Rambo" movie has more realism in it, than levels in Ghost Recon. My 2 cents and Happy New Year ------------------ I've never seen skies that look this realistic! its still an "OK" shooter. G36 rocks by the way...

u missunderstood me. i have heard that somebody was able to crack it. i have a fully legitemate copy at my house which i got as a present for b-day (and reluctantly accepted it lol)
3. If you don't mind, I would drop my 2 cents on ur statement:.....
oh yeah....your 2 cents.....
Ghost Recon, while still trying to recreate Spec Ops operations.....has gone away from the whole stealth thing in Rouge Spear (it still has MP5SD but, not very useful at big ranges). Rouge Spear was doing the spec ops thing very good....most missions were hostage rescue with 2 recon missions. Ghost Recon was trying to move to the rangers or the airborne and got stuck in the middle. very bad place to be. almost as bad as engaging a force 3 times bigger then urs at very long ranges. without stealth, u lose the advantage, and then the numbers do matter. thats another one of those development screw-ups.....OFP istn without its screw-ups either.......long list here......why put in the capability to drive and fly if u cant do it good.......the campaign is WAY OVERSCRIPTED......took me 5 tries to pass this mission, it would just get stuck, everybody would just be chillin with all enemies dead and when i try to go somewhere, they start screamin at me, return to formation. also, at one retry point, the truck we were on got stuck in midair, i had to shoot it from the back to get it moving, then run after it.........and look at all the new versions.....if u do the game right the first time, you wont need all those fix patches..........so, every game did something wrong.......(by the way, RS is the best FPS in the world.....)(and, this is my logest post EVER)

FlyDude, First of all, Iam too hardcore Roguer Spear player, begining with Rainbow Six...but when I saw Ghost Recon...I just wasnt ready to throw my 50$ for another add-on the year later and with not as many improvemetns in it. here is my first impression on Demo, if you are intrested... http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/sims/boards/bbs/Forum75/HTML/000015.html As u can see alot of people agreed with my opinion out there. Secondly, I do agree that either of the games are perfect, but then what game is? I mean the most "Free of Bugs" game out of the box, that I've seen is IL-2 Sturmovik, but there is still room for improvemetns. Thirdly, Originally posted by FLYdude: why put in the capability to drive and fly if u cant do it good So you are happy with what GR developer did? They didn't want to put Choper model in cuz, with thier engine it wouldn't look good, so now when you are done with objectives in the missions u don't need to get to extraction point? Real missions does not stop right there, most of times get to Extraction is most difficult part in real life... So here you go developers trying to "simulate" ground ops but in the same time dumping realism by saving visual effect...In OFP, developers weren't ready to follow this way, they were and are ready to do anything to make sure they are simulating "how is it to be a grunt" Even if thier Flight Model for UH-60 is not realistic...atleast they provide you with realistic stage in your missions. Another point: when i try to go somewhere, they start screamin at me, return to formation man it called "deserting" in real life and in some millitary organizations, people get shot for this also, at one retry point, the truck we were on got stuck in midair Personally I've never seen this...but then again u get the insertion stage of the operation even with bad physics, but still, its not like in GR you start 100m away from your objectives, somewhere in the bush if u do the game right the first time, you wont need all those fix patches. Once again nobody is perfect, but if start to compare bugs in OFP and GR, in the ratio of work been done in OFP, I believe there will much less bugs in OFP than in GR. ------------------ I've never seen skies that look this realistic! wow wow wow wow......hold up.........Ghost Recon isnt another addon (we did see a lot of those though...UO, CO ). i would have bought it right away, but im not a big infantry fan.....i think GR is also an "OK" shooter........ i get both and when ppl say that GR is R6:3...........NEVER!!!!!!!!!! lol.......anyway...as for OFP......they take an "OK" shooter and they give you the ability to fly and drive......ok its different.....its fun..........but the flying and driving parts dont simulate anything.....so u could say that its for the most part a sim.........also....yeah....GR is somewhat messed up, but so is OFP.......finnally, i cant wait for the REAL R6:3 ......... I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW!!!!!!!!! its an inf. sim.........and the air and land parts r there so u wont have to rely on stupid AI for support.......happy.....i never said i hate OFP.....i was kinda disapointed cause i thought this would be great (U CAN DRIVE AND SHOOT AND FLY) flying and driving is still my fav part of the game (it is arcade, but its fun)......as i said before, i dont like inf. lol, i can shoot up to ranges of 50m, anything above that, i need guided missiles. ive actually been thinking about joinin a squadron or a clan, whatever the hell u call it in this game.......still need to upgrade to 1.4..............

FLYDUDE, You still here? Then you really like the game, umm... If it were me and I find Mario Bros. arcadish why would I stay on it's forums?
I like GR but I don't go to it's forums to shit on people for it's faults. We got your message and thank you for them, so good bye and have a beer on the way out. Thank you!

KILO, check my FAQ page a few threads down. I have a list of them for addons, missions.
PV's is where you can find most addons that are worth downloading

Kilo, I'm no expert but I have read a few times here that you shouldn't go higher than 512 MB of RAM. I'd just get a 256 stick and see how it goes. That'll give you 320MB. Here's a bit of a site... http://www.flashpoint1985.com/index2.html [This message has been edited by 14th_JAR (edited 01-03-2002).]

islands r fake. i better say fictional. they look alright. and only ppl that were born in europe will understand the street signs. (well, some of em) as for the campaign........it was cool for me, untill our squad got seperated and i was supposed to get back to base (at morton) all by myself after they told us to evac the island........is it just me.......but what part of a "squad tactics simulation thingy" requires u to cross a field all by urself full of BMPs. at that mission i stopped playin the campaign and went on to multiplayer. its wierd.......i usually play a mission untill i pass it......but on that one......it just got boring like the 2nd time............

I know I was pissed about how hard the campaign was. Not sure if I got better or the patches help dumb down the AI sharp shooters One of my problems was I would rush in to complete the mission instead of trying to take my time and be more stealth like. I just on the mission after killdozer, w/out the save cheat I wouldn't be no where near this far but I don't dedicate that much time to SP, I'm a MP guy all the way looks like I'm #50 [This message has been edited by Top Gun (edited 01-03-2002).]

50, thats sweet. I understand the roadsigns, well of course i was born in Europe....lol. I thought OFP was supposed to have over 50 single player missions but it only has like 13. Anybody play the last signle mission where you are the commander of a AAA battalion? I tried playing it but it took like 10 minutes to load and the Framerate was like 1 Frame every 30 seconds.

no joy here, lowly PIII 550 not recommend for the faint of heart Plenty of SP & MP missions to download, you can even get some of the campaign missions done over in the snow add on. Looks so sweet

Flydude, you only got to After Montignac??!?! Thats only like 20% into the campaign. If you found that hard, no wonder you don't like OFP, its not for Quake-ers . God, I got that mission on like the 2nd or 3rd try. And BTW, if a guy gets seperated from his squad in real life does he just sit there and say "Hey, the recruiter said I would be part of a team! I quit!". Of course not, he makes due with what he has and tries to get back to his forces. Thats how it works in OFP too. As for the M-16. The M-16 is a first class gun. It doesn't jam much, at least not since 1967. Anyone who knows a little about guns knows that . The original M-16 had some probs (like any new gun) but most of them were fixed, even by the M-16A1. The M-16A2 and beyond are great weapons, from the Jungles of Asia to the Deserts of the Middle East. The G36 is just a cheap solution for Germany after they cancelled the G11 . http://www.wwa.com/~dvelleux/m16rifle.html Go there for the history of the M-16 series. yep, whistler tryin to be a smartass again...lets start replyin yeah...i got to after montignac, tried it twice, got bored of it...went to multiplayer. Quake-er.......hhhhmmmm......all i can say to that......hope you have rouge spear......if u do.....come to GS for some 1v1 (no point insulting each other now is there) as for the seperated from squad thing......how the hell did he get seperated?? M16 doesnt jam comment: well, i dont think u understand what i mean........jam a lot doesnt mean jam every 2 mags (thats the L85 lol).........by the "jams a lot" comment i meant jams WAY more then the G36 or the AK-47 also.........u dont even know how to argue.......all u do is spread insulting comments.......nobody cares what u think, unless u can provide some facts that make the other guy/gun look bad.. for example....most of the G36s tested were able to fire around 25,000 rounds without cleaning without jamming.....hehe....and that was done in Yuma, AZ, at 120 degree temps

Here I can reply to some of it: I don't really care whether you got "bored" (cough* can't beat the 5th mission ) or not, playing 20% of your illegal copy doesn't give you much credibility on this forum. Sorry sir, I never knew you were an expert on guns. Have lots of Jams? How many years did you serve? Thats what I thought. I have no experience on real assault rifles, but from what I know of real soldiers the M-16A2 is a reliable and accurate gun. There are lots of current/ex-servicemen here, ask them, and read the website I gave you. I know its a lot of words, but they are good words . I dunno about the L85 but apparently the new A2 version is good. I never said the M-16A2 is better than the G-36, I never fired either. All I said was the G36 was concieved after the G11 was cancelled for cost reasons, maybe you didnt understand me. I said it in a sly way to see if you would fall off your rocker like a kid, and wadda ya know . Id assume that the 20-30 years the G36 has over the M-16 would make it better in some ways. The G-36 is a great gun, I don't think its possible for the Germans to make a 'bad' gun . You get seperated from your squad because the rest of your squad is killed. That is explained at the beginning of the mission. As for nobody caring what I think, well you sure seem to care alot! Anyway, I am tired of talking to you (I wouldn't even call it an argument). Bye. i look at the numbers (number here being 25,000)
I know its a lot of words, but they are good words . I dunno about the L85 but apparently the new A2 version is good.
yeah, i was takin a crack at the A1, A2 isnt that bad

there is some truth in that, but i good rifle came out in the end

reliability being one

we agree

Safedisc2 has nothing to do with FADE. Believe me, your copy is flawed but chances are, you may not even know it. You should be even able to play very far into the campaign... but the effects are all going to be there. That's the beauty of it. You didn't pay for the game, but you pay for it when you try to play because you're not really playing the real game.

why do you say that 14th_JAR about the ram? I personally have 768mb SDRAM and my OS fly's..... getting another 512mbsdram soon never can have too much as long as the rest of the system is in sync. and you mothe board can handle it.

People, People, stop the FLAMING. I hear a lot of good things about the M-16. I heard that it can operate in bad conditions like the desert. Im not sure about the Arcitic snow? anybody know about that? How does that system work in OFP? Does your game just stop running or what? Just curious, i know that i got the leagal copy cause it came with a Manual and S***.

Mongoose,
Like I said, I am no expert. I am only going from conversations which occurred at the hardware forums regarding RAM.
I read various things including that WIN 9x will only allow 256MB for other programs and that if you have too much RAM it will actually slow things down because it is quicker for the Hard Disc to provide it.
I have no idea if any of this is true.
I myself have 512MB and it's working great.

Kilo, I'm an ex-jarhead (well, actually an in-active reserve jarhead since once you are, you are...Semper Fi!).
The A2 does quite well in the snow and cold. The only thing you have to be careful of is going in and out. The SOB will sweat and rust in a heartbeat. The one corps weapon that doesn't do well in the cold is the M-198, 155mm Howitzer. Won't elevate for shit under 10 below and we actually warped a barrel on one with a 7bag white charge on a fire mission.
