I have pretty much all of the current and old flight sims.."Ace Combat4" is almost the best looking out of the lot..and its on the PS2 for gods sakes..?!?!?!? Ok, it will be definatly "arcadey"..but so is Typhoon..with the power available on the PC I ask..why does'nt TYPHOON look this good? Check out the screen shots and video please: http://ps2.ign.com/previews/15726.html -Dont you wish it looked as good as this??

I must say, Ace Combat 4 does look very nice indeed, but that nighthawk looks a little too wide don't you think........just being picky The Cockpit shot looks very nice too. I must say the hangers, and the ground objects in general (in Typhoon) could be done much better, and I know this won't affect gameplay, but what's wrong with having Comanche hokum like detail for the Tungasta and SAMs? It would make the game a lot more "immersive" and certainly would last a heap longer on my C: drive. I do like the modeling of the eurofighter (I love the aircraft as you can probably tell from my name). I just hope maybe Rage still has the time to increase the detail on the terrain and ground objects of Typhoon.

"why does'nt TYPHOON look this good?"
Its simple, console developers dont have to make games that will still work on a P2 400mhz with a tnt2 card. Console developers will take the hardware to its max.
but AC4 isnt that impressive if you ask me, namco could of done way better on ps2, but development cost on ps2 is -INSANELY- high. First the maps are small, nothing compared to PC. Second, the ground looks very blurry when you are at low altitude, remember jane's USAF? Third, well the physics, ai, avionics are pretty poor in AC4, so it save alot of CPU power.
Gamecube and Xbox will do -WAY- better than AC4, simply cause development cost and ease is alot better on both vs the ps2. Namco is making gamecube its target platform, so lets just wait and see how they handle the graphics with gamecube, but i assure you that what you saw on ps2 wont come close to what gamecube will be pushing.
oh and for PC, well maybe we'll see that in 2 year, when geforce3 or 4 and P4 2000mhz is common..By that time the minimum requirement should be a p3 700-900mhz and geforce, so that mean developers will finally be able to push those kind of graphics, probably better in fact.

Buggy: I agree totally the maps are alot smaller, in fact I think it concentrates on just an island and surrounding area. But it seems to me they put alot more effort into the details than they needed to. The Typhoon demo seemed not even a good re hash of the original..of course I will reserve judgement till the full game is out and I play it. But I have a tainted first impression already.

BTW all terrain is blurred in all sims at low altitude, it will be that way till we all have a Pentium6 and a Gforce5, then it may start to become reasonable detail from any draw distance, depending on the code and engine of course,

I agree with the fact that the hardware today isn't up to it, but at least Rage could make the rivers and watersides look better. I mean how can you have grass on the beach or lakeside?!
I know I'm being picky, but I repeat again: it WOULD make the game more 'immersive' for me if the ground detail was higher.

I know I'm being picky, but I repeat again: it WOULD make the game more 'immersive' for me if the ground detail was higher. While I'd also like to see different shoreline and riveedige textures; having it the way it is doesn't effect immersion one bit for me. I really don't think this is a big enough deal to effect immersion; it's just an issue of eye-candy. Typhoon isn't a ground sim it's an air sim; and I don't ever see myself saying .."damn those beaches just ruin it for me." Now if they were modelling New York City and there was only 5 or 6 3D skyscapers (like a civilian sim might so), I'd have a problem. Oh by the way HG..while those Lock On shots are real nice..the Icelandic terrain looks nothing like that. It's mostly plateau interspersed with mountain peaks, icefields; coast deeply indented by bays and fiords. And certainly not a lot of trees either. Not to say the terrian couldn't be better, but I'm guessing sightseeing won't be something I'll have much time to do in the game.

Detailed ground texture gives you a much better sense of altitude, distance to target and speed when flying low, apart from just being eye candy. I for one rate eye candy very highly. When I first ran EF2000, I spent hours in free flight just sight seeing, without feeling the need to blow something up (not for a while anyway). If you think todays technology can't handle it, look at IL2, and this still isn't pushing technology to the limits.
Having said that, I eagerly await Typhoon and will certainly buy it, and will no doubt like it. But I'd sure like it a whole lot more if it had better detail at low altitude (that's where it gets exciting).

just look at the Terrain in Lock On. The trees rock! If this can be done now then it should raise the standard to new sims in the future! Ya think? http://www.flanker2.com/lock-on2.html# as an example

You would be surprised what programmers could do with time and money. You don't need Pent 6 and GF5 to have flight sims that look as good as that trailer. Programmers are rushed to finish projects before they are done and they have to "Dumb Down" sims to make them run on everyones machine. More people have 400Mhz than ones with 1Ghz. The biggest culprit of all is the size of this genre. Flight Simmers are the worst group of people when it comes to a new release, they tear it to shreds and nit pick the hell out of it. I'm not a big Quake fan, but it's safe to say it hasn't gotten to the point it has by having people nitpick the hell out of it.

Good point, its sad to say this but from my experience sim fans are the most negative group of game fans. They nit pick constantly that a certain game doesnt fit their idea of what a sim should be.

Im sorry but that screenshot above just looks like it was airbrushed, in fact the whole Flanker series looks like that. If someone would spend the time and create scenery which actually looks like it does in the real world i would be happy. I wonder if any of these artists have actually seen what the ground looks like at low level as well as hihgh altitude? just looks cartoonish in those screens. When someone can come out and create scenery which looks as realistic as Falcon4 (which is a few years old now) then it will be a start. Perfect sim??? lets see- Flanker FM, JFA18 avionics, Falcon4 scenery, and Falcon4 dynamic campaign JMHO- which means nothing. lol

The only problem with that picture is that the pilot has too much altitude!! Andy

F2 looks like that in low detail terrain, but far better in high detail. The Jedi Master

That's because the A-10 is supposed to fly UNDER the lines. In fact, many A-10 pilots wonder how Apache crews fly so high. The Jedi Master

All kidding aside, I think that is a great picture. That's as close to flyable terrain at very low altitude as I've seen yet.
The distant visibility might need to be reduced a bit. In today's ozone, arsenic, and loose chad infected air, the inflight viz is a bit less than that...even on a good day.
Looking forward to the sim!

well the more I look at it, it doesn't look bad, I guess maybe the colors kinda make me go "eeewwww" all the bright green, and orange. Flanker seemed way to bright to me I guess, the colors were really light. Am I missing some setting or add-on scenery to make it look darker??
also, low res and only 11 FPS?? hmmmmm Im sure its not correct, Flanker runs like a champ so i would assume this one will to

Interesting. It appears they took actual photos and incorperated them over the modles. This looks pretty interesting to get but i will wait. I wonder how good the FM will be?
