What's the longest unemployed stint you have ever had? I'm talking about involuntary unemployment due to being laid off or for health reasons.

Mine was 6 months. I worked for a company called EDS when the 9/11 terrorist attack occurred and then the subsequent economic recession. I was laid off from EDS at the end of June 2002 and I didn't find another job until December of 2002 even though I was applying for jobs left and right. It was certainly not a pleasant time of my life between what happened on 9/11 and also being unemployed.

Got laid off from my airline during Covid. They tried to fire nearly 600 pilots and replace us with a subcontractor with other pilots on worse terms. In the end they had to rehire us, but I flew my last five 737 flights on 23 December 2020, and started my A320 type rating in April 2022. So I went a year and three months without a job.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Mine was on/off for about 18 months. Was laid off in about April 2016, started sending out resumes, diagnosed with colon cancer in October 2016, recovered from surgery, started a new job in January 2017, started chemo, got FIRED for missing time due to chemo even though they knew I was going to be doing chemo when they hired me and promised to work with me (and this was a job at a HOSPITAL). Was unfit for work the rest of chemo due to chronic chemo induced fatigue (walking to the mailbox was my biggest accomplishment most days), through June, started looking again late 2017... took a part time job early 2018, by mid year was re-hired by the company that had laid me off in 2016 and then that company closed it's doors for good in November 2018 and I started my current job in January 2019.

I'm very glad F4U that you made it through all that with the job instability but more importantly the colon cancer.

After reading the experiences from others so far, I feel kind of wimpy - my longest time has been a few weeks, less than a month I think. I've had several jobs and after getting laid off, or companies going out of business on me, I usually got another job within a few weeks.

I was a consultant for a while, working for a friend of mine, so it wasn't a normal job, and there was a period of time where there wasn't enough business to provide much money so things were pretty lean for a few months, but I was technically employed, and when I decided it was time to give up on that and get another job, I was able to get something pretty quickly.

Edit: Actually, I didn't connect it with this since it was all voluntary and somewhat planned, but I was out of work for a couple of months while I moved from Alaska to California, driving with some people and taking our time. I had planned for it and had saved up money to get through that period until I could find a job in California.

I guess I was lucky. Zero.

From age 14 to retirement. I was employed by 5 companies of my choice (even during college) -- moved on on the day I wanted to -- and, towards the end kept working at NASA while turning down job offers (offered far more pay but not as much fun smile ).

After I retired relatively young, another Science Based Research group was planning to offer -- but, I sent word out to the industry -- I'm retired permanently. Basically, I'm lazy biggrin

Most likely I will be working until my health no longer allows it. I’ve had too many “resets” happen to my 401K.

I don't know if that's what you wanted, but if not, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you're able to do fun stuff as much as possible in the meantime.

That was quite a struggle to overcome. Glad you persevered and succeeded.

Correct. It was originally owned by GM and then got spun off as a separate company. EDS was then bought out and absorbed by HP about 15 years ago.

I've been laid off a total of six times in my career that started in the late 80's. I worked for a steel company, then financial IT, and finally medical IT. Each time it was because of mergers, acquisitions, out sourcing (moving operations over seas), and just getting laid off to be replaced by H1B visa tech workers (even though it was/is illegal). Anyone working IT can tell you that law has rarely been enforced. Even before the internet and social media became popular, I always kept a a list of contacts with vendors, other industry companies, and tech recruiting offices. Every time I had a job already lined up as soon as I was laid off.

EDS had a large office here in the Detroit area. I have worked with many of their former employees over time. I always liked the stories of the strict dress codes and rules for things like facial hair and beards.

Oh yes, I remember that well. My dress code was suit and tie. I can only imagine how absurd it must have looked to other people seeing a tech in suit and tie replace the toner and drum kit for a network printer.
