I'm thinking about getting a new TV. Nothing fancy, just a good quality picture, 55" to 65" size. If I could get just a TV monitor without all the built in smart apps etc that would be great since we have a Roku Streambar that does all the receiving work.

Thanks.

I'm not an expert, but I think it will depend on what you consider a good quality picture. For me, standard LCD displays have terrible black levels, so I have to get sets with local dimming vs. edge lit sets to feel it's a good picture. For Samsung, that would be their QLED series, I believe, and from Sony it would be the Bravia series.

For general TVs, I think the best bang for the buck for a while has been Vizio, but I don't think they do local dimming. I have a 32" Vizio in my bedroom and it's fine there, but for a bigger screen, I got a Sony Bravia years ago, and with the backlit array, it really pops with the colors vs. the blacks. There's a small bit halo around things in high-contrast situations (like white text on a black background), but it's not bad. OLED is the best image quality, but they're still a lot more expensive than LCD.

I think most sets are going to be "smart" TVs these days, but I don't think it really adds to the price, and you can just ignore it and use the Roku on its input. My guess is that most dedicated monitors of that size will be geared more for professional use and be more rugged and much more expensive than a consumer TV.

I'm a fan of OLED. I use an 55" LG C1 series as a monitor and a 65" Samsun S95B series for movies. The problem is they are expensive and have loads of smart TV features I never use or have even have turned on for that matter. If I'd have known about a simpler one with an OLED screen at the time, I would have gotten those instead. The picture quality and colors is great, particularly in darker scenes in video games. I've noticed loads more details and smaller lighting sources that usually get washed out in those dark scenes, environments.

This is what we have

I suspect any 4k is going to look better than our old LCD 1080p. And the only reason I am considering replacing it is because there is one rectangular section* of this TV that has gone ever so slightly dimmer than the rest of the TV, I had to point it out to my wife as she had never noticed it.

Two grand is out of the question so that eliminates OLED.

*Imagine the screen split in half, with each half also subdivided into 5-6 sections top to bottom. The second section from the top on the right side is "off" slightly.

4K will be fine. There is no need for more as the content for higher resolutions is very limited now and some time into the future.

I caught a YouTube video by a tv repair guy who had made an analysis on the TV’s he had in the shop and his conclusion did not surprise me. Best overall in build quality, reliability and overall quality was Sony. As these are not inexpensive the budget option mentioned was LG. I have a 2017 LG LCD and while it is nothing special it does the job and I’m losing interest in TV anyway.

LG however have partnered with Microsoft to bring Co-pilot AI to their sets so make of that what you will.

If I were in the market today, I would prioritize picture quality, sound, price, and not have any preferences with regards to the smart-tv side of things. Sadly, I don’t know of any current TV sets not offering smart-tv these days.

I think I bought my 65" Sony as they were clearing them out for the new models, so I think you might find some good deals that way. As an example, here's a 65" Samsung QLED at Best Buy that I think is priced at $1000 because it's last year's model or something:

I've had a few of those over the years, nothing wrong with them.
The trick with expensive TVs is the the model from a year or two ago, they're way cheaper, or factory refurbished, knocks the price down usually in half or more.

This looks like it could be a good set for the money:

https://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-Bluetooth-Headphone-Chromecast-M65Q6-L4/dp/B0CJHRZRVD

It says it's not released yet, but some stores, like Walmart, say they have it in stock.

Now THAT just might fit the bill! Thanks!
