I was researching Thanksgiving and learned:

At the "First Thanksgiving" in October 1621, the Pilgrims and Native Americans (Wampanoag tribe) likely ate a meal consisting of venison (deer brought by the Native Americans), wildfowl (including possibly turkey), various types of seafood like lobster, mussels, and fish, corn, beans, squash, and local fruits and nuts, with little resemblance to the modern Thanksgiving meal which includes dishes like mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie; there's no record of a large roasted turkey being served at the time.

Somewhere along the way since October 1621, someone decided the turkey is to become the National Thanksgiving dinner.

Turkey became a traditional part of Thanksgiving dinner for a number of reasons, including:

Plentiful - Turkeys were plentiful in New England, where they were often given to soldiers during the Civil War.

Cheap -Turkeys were inexpensive.

Big enough to feed a family - Turkeys were large enough to feed a family, making them a popular choice for large gatherings.

Raised for meat - Turkeys were raised primarily for their meat, unlike cows and hens, which were useful for milk and eggs.

More info on why we eat Turkeys on Thanksgiving

Honestly I don't like turkey. Anyone else here don't care for turkey? I would rather have a nice spiral ham.

Turkey can be ok if you get one with decent fat content so it's not so dry.

How do you choose a turkey with decent fat content? They are all wrapped up and frozen and you can't see inside them, unlike a pack of beef, chicken and pig you can see the meat and the fat and how it's cut.

I was at store with my sisters yesterday and learn there is more than one type of turkey sold for Thanksgiving, you can even choose a male or female (Tom and Hen).

I don't know about Canadians but I'd say that the majority of Americans only eat a significant amount of turkey during Thanksgiving and to a lesser extent, Christmas. The rest of the year consists of the occasional sandwich with some turkey deli meat.

I will eat a bit of turkey if it's available but the only time I am excited for turkey is if it has been deep fried.

The deep fried whole turkey leg is one of my top favorite carnival/fair food items!

You can get smoked turkey from any BBQ place around here anytime of year. Though I'd much prefer some brisket or ribs instead. We only ever ate Turkey at Thanksgiving and Christmas, with the exception of the few years one of my uncles hosted, he hated turkey so it was usually roast beef or prime rib instead.

Popeye's selling out their turkeys again. Incredible that folks are willing to pay $99 for it and sides are extras.

I had no clue what brisket was until I moved to Texas in 1996. Needless to say it was a wonderful discovery for me! smile

I eat ground turkey year round. The bulk of meat I cook with is ground turkey, actually, alongside ham and pork. Grass fed beef I eat in much smaller quantities.

I like to do a whole turkey roast exactly once a year for Thanksgiving. However, I will make smoked Turkey Legs (like they sell at Disney parks) multiple times throughout the year. Its delicious and honestly better than whole turkey
