Pulled the trigger on this game. Played for a bit, and too early to draw any conclusions, even if I'm sure I will like it, which is a conclusion in itself. Download was fairly small, about 12 GB I think. The game runs very well, and looks probably a little better than I thought it would. It's obvious its an old game, but they did a nice job with the port. I wish they had added first-person mode, but otherwise it all looks, runs and plays well.
The price in the US is $50, which will put off some players I think. But I figured the game is probably a 50 to 100 hour run, and would fit nicely in between now and Stalker 2.
What is especially encouraging about this version is how warmly it has been received by the legacy customers, those players who played it years ago and loved it, and came to defend its honor only to find the game is better than ever.
Personally I like the idea of playing this game on the coattails of RDR 2, learning more about the story, the characters I came to love and hate in that game. My reunion with Bill Willamson didn't go as expected. Which was a bummer.
Finally a chance to play this game after years of wanting to, just based on the praise it receives from the players. So far so good, and not undeserved from what I have seen.

Why is that? Price? Dance card is already full? Not sold on it? Something else?
I've just played the first hour so far, helping a lady with some things around the farm. Now I'm about to set off it to the game world. I like it so far, the vibe from this opening hour where the player doesn't really do much, but the game is establishing the setting. It feels like the first paragraph of a good book.

I enjoyed it tremendously upon its original release, and bought the PS4 port as soon as it came out. The replay was as good as the first time.
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Why is that? Price? Dance card is already full? Not sold on it? Something else? Yeah, my dance card is totally full... plus I don't like the price. It will come down in a sale eventually and then I'll probably get it. I'm not working anymore, and my priority is keeping my car and motorbike on the road, paying bills and food. Games, as much as I like playing them are a luxury that are way down on my list now...

I can dig it, and yeah it will go on sale, probably in the Spring sale if not before. Not sure how well it is selling. Just had a look and RDR has 1500 in game, compared to 30,000 in RDR 2, not that we can draw many conclusions from this. But if it is not selling well maybe it will be on sale sooner. I've dropped about five hours in to it so far. Movement and controls are not especially good, for me. On the horse, on foot. There are two speeds. Too slow and too fast. I would like a mod that mimics RDR 2's horse speed control. Third person is not ideal either. But I can set all that aside for the atmosphere and story. It's been a slow burn thus far. Already have had a horse shot out from under me, which never happened once in 400+ hours of RDR 2, except at the end of Arthur's trail, sniff sniff. Some crook was runnin' from the law and came straight for me. I sat still on my horse trying to make out what was happening and he ran right past me on foot. The lawmen chasing him were shooting at him and I was in the line of fire. After they shot the man dead I hopped off to see if I could loot him, and as I turned back around my horse fell dead. Hadn't even known he was hurt, maybe i could have saved him somehow. RDR 1 is similar to the second game in many ways, as you'd expect. Missions have the long ride and conversation. There are challenges to complete. Skin five coyotes, then five deer. Pick plants, and so on down the line. Stranger missions, bounty hunting. Dead eye, duels. Weapons feel weak, but I'm still on the starter gear. Cover system works very well, and I don't recall using a cover system in RDR 2. Was it there? Maybe I did and just forget. All in all I'm enjoying the game. It shows it's age in a number of ways. I would like it better if it were first person and I can find a way to alter movement and controls. The mojo is good. Setting, narrative, story, dialog, content. Worth fifty dollars? That's up to you, but it is a classic game that we PC purists had never had the chance to play. For anyone who loved RDR 2, or digs the R* formula it's worth it I think. Or wait for a sale

I) I think it's an apples and oranges comparison because I think the great majority of people who wanted to play RDR have already done so and have moved on to other games. The 1500 players you saw in-game were most likely first-time players.

I imagine its a mix of first-timers and people wanting to play again on PC. I hang out at the GTA forum as well, and it's clear many players are giving it another go since it is on PC, which I hinted at talking about how the legacy customers have given it their blessings. Anyway, I'm not so concerned with that, as trying to divine how well it may have sold, first timers or not. It appears it is probably doing well, despite the price https://www.rdr2.org/news/red-dead-redemption-climbs-up-steam-top-sellers-chart/RDR Release thread @ GTA Forum

And another thing.... RDR has poker. I praised RDR 2's poker to high heaven, and here's more of it. Too early to tell if it is better or worse. But it is higher stakes. I sat at the table at Macfarlane ranch and played two hands and won $14, which is a lot compared to RDR 2.I folded on the first, and went all-in on the second. My Queens over Jacks two-pair beat Queens over 6s and won the $14, which essentially doubled my money on hand.
Also noteworthy for folks considering this game, is the save system is rooted in consoles. Unless I am missing something, there are only auto-saves, or you can set up camp and manually save that way. No quick-save sort of thing.

I 'm pretty much certain RDR2 has cover system too, but won't reinstall to check.
Afair, RDR has a slightly weaker story (still great don't get me wrong), but the world is also bigger and action wider. R* were already experts at doing great games when it came out.

yeah, you're probably right. maybe I just ignored it (or used it extensively)
It's necessary to use in the first game, because otherwise you cannot shoot over the cover if you're crouched. My first firefight was hilarious as i kept putting the reticle on the enemy's noggin, pulled the trigger and nothing seemed to happen and finally i realized i was hitting the rock I was crouched behind.
One thing that stands out in comparison to RDR 2 is this game puts the wild in wild west. Was taking a leisurely stroll at night down main street in Armadillo and suddenly some dudes on horseback came galloping through town firing their pistols and i stood there watching. Probably should have popped a couple of them, but it had taken me by surprise. next time I'll be faster on the draw. Bears and cougars are no joke. RDR 2 seemed more tame, or measured, in comparison, the world around you. And I've barely seen any of it, just the starting area really and i know it's going to get wilder.

Had a look and noticed the game had defaulted to a 'custom' graphics preset. Changed it to Ultra and the game now looks even better, how about that?
Did the mission to obtain the second Dead Eye level, which was a cool mission in itself, helping convince the crowd to buy some of West Dickens' magical elixir. But I don't like how it works, the dead eye. Holding the reticle over the target auto-marks it and i don't want this. Can it be turned off somehow? Doesn't look like it. Does it change again for level 3 so I can only use mark when I want to?
There's an achievement for completing 20 missions with the same horse, if i understand how it works. So when I did the mission to help Bonnie break some wild horses, and she says to keep the stallion, I didn't know what to do. Is it a better horse than the one you start with? I guess so, but I'm not even sure what type it is. Kentucky Saddler? Anyway, I didn't want to miss out on what could be my only shot at an amazing mount, so i swapped, and reset my progress on that one. But it doesn't seem all that much better.
A couple times when in town I have seen a man holding a woman at knife point, and then he kills her. I guess I am supposed to shoot him or hogtie him maybe? I didn't want to get a bounty on my head by committing crime in town, but this one seems kind of obvious. I'm OK to light this dude up right?

It's been so long I don't think I remember most of your questions. I do remember some of those encounters, I think I hogtied him and then the woman started kicking him while he was tied up on the ground. I just left them like that.

Dbond, the auto dead eye mechanic is removed later in the game. I can't remember at which stage, I think when you get to go south of the border, it will level you up to be able to manually target in slow-motion. RDR1 still has some of the best looking skyboxes in my opinion. The way that the cumulous clouds are backlit by the sun or moon, the late night, low lying and fast moving overcast and of course the wild thunderstorms. I enjoyed back on the Xbox360 days being able to play my own old cowboy songs along with the game. I also would just ride around and listen to the soundtracks of Jeremiah Johnson and The Straight Story. I played a little of my original 360 version ported over to PC using Xenia. As I suspected, when the game could reach 60 fps it looked and played so much better though stuck at a low resolution 720p. I also dare say that the physics combined with the Euphoria engine are better in the first game. I witnessed an endless random display of cool, crazy physics things going on in the game and I'd already played it twice before. I didn't finish this Xenia third play through and I'm not sure I'll ever play the PC port which I had always wanted to see. I really like the original game's engine. I've always enjoyed this series by and large but I'm always put off by the sick and weird stuff rockstar seems to enjoy including. I will not play a grand theft auto game ever again. A memory I had of playing RDR1 back when it first released on the Xbox 360. I had not been following the game as I typically tried staying away from rockstar's stuff but when I first played the game and heard Marston speak, I thought that it might be Bill Paxton voicing the character. Of course I was wrong but that's just something I remembered. I do enjoy the character of John Marston and the personality that the voice actor gave to the character.

Hey thanks for the comments Coot. The sky boxes are nice, yes you're right. Thunderstorms are nicely done too. The port looks surprisingly good, for a game so old.
Turns out that shooting the guy in Armadillo holding the lady at knife point is OK. He had a partner, I guess, as a man standing nearby while the assault was happening opened fire on me when I shot the perp, but no crime, no bounty.
I"m having a good time with it, but Stalker's dropping today so that will cut in to my RDR time.
