I don't understand why he did it. Did he get more privileges or more authority over those who do not know he didn't really hold those ranks and awards?

Same reason some folks running for public office lie about their rank and combat service...

(not that we have /ever/ seen that...)

It takes a really special kind of low life person to commit stolen valor.

I seen videos online of civilians wearing uniforms and lying about having served so they can get a free meal at some restaurant or special seat on civilian ailiner - those folks should be thrown in prison.

But this Sergeant was already in the military and he was a high ranking Sergeant. Makes no sense to me.

I didn't know there are that many levels of Sergeant

Why did he do it. As said in the article -

“ "You're portraying to people that you've served in combat and you were wounded," Anderson said. "And that portrays a type of respect and [admiration] from other Marines that would look up to him for that. That's probably what he was after."

Awards portray what you’ve done and establish a credibility of capability. More than just bragging rights. It gives others a quick assessment of your service.

First I have heard of the guy. I loved the fake PhD. Guy sounds whacked and it's hard to believe there were no previous serious incidents that would have made someone go, "Hey, hold on a second here" for a guy who was promoted to SgtMaj (no idea how the corps abbreviates it). Is it that bad even in the Marines???

Stolen valour within the frame of valour itself? I can believe that, anyone who's served has encountered braggarts & liars, but this is the first time I've heard of it being manifested via decoration within the service.
