What a voice and screen presence he had. I always liked him as Admiral Greer in the Clancy movies, and he was hilarious in Coming To America.
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

For those who may not know, his very first film role was on Dr. Strangelove in 1964. He was one of the B-52 crew members.

I've seen James Earl Jones in so many very different roles its hard to count. Everything from Dr. Strangelove to Hunt for Red October. Star Wars and Conan the Barbarian. and many more.
I've always enjoyed his role as Admiral Greer in the Clancy movies as well. I've not read the books so I don't know what kind of man Greer is or how he is written but the way he is portrayed in the films shows a man of character and principle, the kind of individual you hope to have in positions of authority. I would have liked to see a Clancy movie where much of the story centers on Greer's service as he navigates through and operates in military intelligence and politics. He was also great in Field of Dreams and even in small roles like his episode of Highway to Heaven. He had a solid stage presence and beautiful speaking voice.

+1 He certainly had that on-screen gravitas. On a related note, check out "City Limits" which was riffed by Mystery Science Theater 3000. Jones had a small but memorable role in the film.

He was hilariously self depreciating in his appearance as himself on "Big Bang Theory"

His appearance and Katee Sackhoff's appearance are the two most memorable guest star appearances on that show. Both were great.

I wish I had gotten a picture of it before it changed but a digital billboard near had the headline "The Voice of Lords and Kings" and on on the left side was a profile of Darth Vader and on the right side a profile of Mufasa and in the middle James' headshot. Underneath it said RIP James Earl Jones 1931-2024. Totally took me by surprise as I drove by.
I've never seen a billboard celebrate a dead celebrity like that before. He was well-loved and treasured.
