On 21 November 1783, the first manned flight took place when Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes flew a free-flying montgolfière over Paris.
There's a great scene in the John Adams HBO mini-series where you see the hot air balloons in use in Paris.
