Carl Eber is coming back.

We will take up the story of Carl Eber of Jasta 18 on 12 Oktober 1917, where we left off with posting 75 back in March.

I won't be posting every day as I did before, probably three times a week.

Before we continue, however; as there were a number of readers who were confused about this character, I feel I should summarize what we know about him thus far.

So, I'll be introducing the 'DIND Companion.'

It’s a long story and, especially if you don’t live in 1917, it’s easy to get lost. So, in the 'Companion' I’ve provided some tools to help. I'll add to the' Companion' every time I post so that the main story and the 'Companion' are always together.

In the 'Companion' you will find:

1 - A short version of Carl Eber’s backstory. I introduced the back story, mostly in little bites, using flashbacks and dreams to slowly explain the character. Maybe it was less clear than it appeared to me.

2 - A summary of Carl Eber’s personal traits and facts about him.

3 - A glossary of German military terms, slang, and more. I sometimes quit making footnotes on some of these terms after they've been introduced, so this may help.

4 - A cast of the characters, historical and fictional, including ground personnel and pets, with screenshots of their markings and photographs is available.

5 - An index of Spitznamen (nicknames)

It will probably take more than one posting to complete all this, we'll start the story after I'm through boring you with all this rehash.

CARL EBER RETURNS 1 MAY!

Today I’ll be adding some new things to the DIND Companion:

He has been currently reassigned to Saxon Jagdstaffel 54s. So I am adding character lists for Jasta 54s and 56, additional information on some of the already introduced characters, and an expanded Glossary.

In the upcoming new posts you’ll find many more German aviation slang terms and phrases, along with a number of idioms used by the German people at that time.

These have been harvested from German language memoirs and novels, mostly written in the 1920s and 30s, Jentsch, Buckner, Fuchs, Brzenk and others. Some of these have a definite Nazi slant to them but are very good for my purposes. There are also some stories from these books.

I want to put a plug in here for Editpad. This thing is amazing. You can scan a book or snip one on the net, upload it into this thing and it will lift that text off the page. Then you can either put it in a Word Document or slap it right onto something like Google Translate and, Bobs your Uncle. Amazing, or as Carl would say, “Famos!”

So, if you haven’t heard of this and have books in say, French or German or whatever, that you’ve always wanted to read but didn’t want to spend a year trying to translate the thing. There you go. Your translation will only be as good as the translation software you use, but you can figure it out with the help of a good online dictionary if it isn’t clear.

I had to slap "Bob's your uncle" onto Google translate to figure out what you were talking about, but sounds great!

The older I get, the more I realize I don't need to be Han, Luke or Leia. I'm just happy to be rebel scum...

My wife watches a lot of British TV and uses it all the time. I guess I just hear it so often I forgot it wasn''t Amerikanisch.

By the way...I do have an Uncle Bob. My father's youngest brother. So, Bob really is my uncle.

Nice work Jerbear.

I sometimes use Bob's your Auntie - when things maybe aren't so clear cut wink
