Finally bought this on Saturday since it was heavily discounted. I've only put about 2 hours into it so far but I can already tell I will like this game mostly due to the attention to historical detail and just the overall atmosphere and immersion. My only complaint so far is that the voice acting and animation during cutscenes can get a bit campy/cheesy at times.

I too bought it on sale a while back (April 2020). But, never played it. I have a lot of Steam games like that.

I think it's called the "I am going to pretend I have all the free time I want to play this huge backlog of games so let me continue to buy more games" syndrome.

An accurate statement.

Realistically, I've vastly overdone it. Many games have "died of old age" -- i.e. no longer worth playing due to outdatedness of mechanics and graphics -- or actual refusal to run on today's hardware.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance a half-year on

The terrain and villages/towns all felt quite authentic, even if I would expect life at that time to not be quite so sanitary, and expected something more reminiscent of the bring-out-your-dead scene from The Holy Grail. It was a game where I enjoyed traveling through the countryside so much I never used fast travel. It also has my favorite melee combat in any game. The shift over time from bumbling blacksmith's son to master swordsman was really cool. As Henry learned I did too and it all dovetailed quite nicely indeed. I thought the archery was not as well done. But overall a fine game.

I had noticed yesterday it was all on sale, and that there is quite a bit of DLC now. Does anyone have an opinion on that, and whether it would be worth another run with the DLC?

Yup, I got the "Royal Edition" for 10 bucks. I figure I will get a lot of bang for the buck with this game. About how many hours did it take you to finish the base game?

LOL Yup! The worst case seems to be with EPIC. I know several people who have 50 or more games that they got completely free on EPIC but have yet to touch any of them.

I don't recall, but the first time I completed it was somewhere around ~100 hours. That's a guess since I've played it since and am currently playing it again. This third one is taking longer because, one I'm not in a hurry and two there's a bunch of DLCs that I haven't played yet.

I'm tickled Epic is still around, decades after their cheesy shareware game beginning. I still remember their first ones that I found on BBS on 2400 bps modem...

I think Fortnite keeps them relevant. Plus their free give aways.

I re-installed KCD to try to get back into and to also check on performance. I now have an SSD and an upgraded graphics card with 6GB and even with the newer hardware update compared to what I had before the game still runs terribly for me. It really has optimization issues. I've read posts where perhaps it has to do with the level of simulation going on in the game. I wish they had not used CryEngine. The only CryEngine game that I've ever played that was optimized and ran well is Prey. I was surprised at how well Arkane did with optimizing that game using a notoriously performance heavy engine although in comparison its a totally different game design. I love the music, the history, the quality of environments and the intriguing combat system but I don't know if I'll ever get through this game. I backed the game before release when they did their kickstarter or whatever it was. I was pleased to learn at the time that individuals who work at Warhorse helped develop some of my favorite games by Illusion Softworks such as Mafia and Hidden and Dangerous as well as the original Operation Flashpoint. Maybe in the future if I'm able to get a brand spanking new PC with super hardware I can finally enjoy the game. Right now with the lackluster performance as well as the time investment involved with this kind of open-ended, nuanced old school RPG I don't think the time for me is now with this game unfortunately.

What are your specs, Coot? I was running KCD perfectly well on a 10 year old 3700K and 970 GTX with high to ultra high graphics settings and getting 60 or so fps, easy.

I have 2015 core i7 4090k, 16GB ram with now an upgrade to an SSD, Windows 10 and a GTX 1660 super 6GB card. I really see no difference if not worse performance from when I had the old HDD drive, a GTX 970 4GB and Windows 7. I think it may have run better on Windows 7 which I miss. I can't stand Windows 10 in comparison plus Windows 10 has all but assured that many if not most of my older games can't be played now.

I've tried the usual attempts of lowering all settings and what have you with little to no change. My previous save had me in one of the bigger towns so I probably should have fast traveled away from there to the out of doors as I recall it usually ran better when away from towns. I wish I could get it running well. I was reminded of how good the writing and voice acting is too when I had my first sword training with that interesting character in Rattay Kingdom Come Deliverance. If I felt capable I would attempt to update my bios and so forth which has never been done to my knowledge but I don't know if any of that would help as other big games that I have still run just fine.

I noticed that KCD could be finnicky about the screen mode.

If I ran in full screen, with a framerate limit in game and vsync on I would see 8-9 FPS and that even more choppy with animation of water and grass or in cutscenes... However, with the frame rate imposed from the GPU driver - vsync off (Gsync monitor) and in windowed I would see 30+ FPS and a much more fluid response overall. That was high enough for my needs, and I then set the balance of IQ and optimisations from the menu to get the best overall appearance without undue loss of performance - the main thing I did was to drop textures to medium to reduce the load on the HDD for streaming models in and for GPU memory (3.5+.5 on the 970).

It is certainly worth iterating through the display modes and vsync/framerate options to avoid the game engine 'thrashing' against the drivers - it is an older Cryengine version abused far beyond it's intended use and can get a bit funny about settings (I also avoid touching it's ingame gamma control, as it FUBARs windows gamma globally - but you can set this 'per title' through the GPU driver)... much of my initial experience was in the beta, and then release candidates, so I saw some... roughness that was reduced in the release version and patches, but the weakness of the optimisation to display mode did still appear to be a thing when I checked after the last main patch.

It is also worth checking that the GPU is in the correct PCIe mode - some issues were caused by a 1x or 2x mode reversion of the PCIe bus. - reseating the card, or changing PCIe slot would resolve this in a few cases (people with much stronger PCs getting worse performance in game than my (original i5 2400, GTX970, HDD system) - resolved by pulling and reseating the GPU - one after buying a new GPU, but then reverting and finding the 'old' one was now good.) I never had to do this, so I can't recall what or how to check, just that it had been a reported issue and resolution.

I'd rather spend 10 bucks to have it on Steam than to have it for free on that crappy client called Epic.

The same for me as well. I'll be putting more time into the game this week and the weekend as well. It's definitely a "slow burn" RPG but I'm fine with that.

I just use Windows 10 defender and free malwarbytes. I use 1080p. I did not see Lieste's display suggestions in time. I usually by default go for native resolution + forcing vsync and triple buffer in nvdia control panel in hopes for a steady 60fps.. I already uninstalled the game so I can't try those tips out. I appreciate the suggestions though Mr_Blastman and all.

The Tournaments they added are kinda neat. It's not a DLC either, it was just added to the game. You get a good piece of gear plus 400 bucks for winning. You can also repeat it to get a mostly full set of armor. It also added a murder investigation quest and an open world event associated with it.

Women's lot DLC added a dog companion Mutt. Both super helpful and the most obnoxious thing they added ever.
The bad: that stupid dog crosses around your feet when you're just walking around town. Tries to be a cat and it gets in the way. In fights it'll sometimes get in the way or eat one of your swings. It's another mouth you kinda need to feed. It also adds dogs to the enemy camps which can add some difficulty to the game.
To good: when hunting it'll retrieve rabbits that you kill. Very handy when you kill one on a slope and it starts sliding away. You can also command it to chase down and kill rabbits, deer and boars, takes some leveling the houndmaster skill to do though. In fights you can also command it to attack a particular person or dog.
The dog is also totally optional, you can just not ever take it, or just tell it to return to the mill and ignore it completely.

Women's lot also added a huge storyline where you play as Theresa. Starts a day before the main game and I'm not sure where it ends since I haven't finished it yet. It goes on for a while and there's not backing out, so once you start it, your in it until it's done.
It also added another long questline later that I haven't come across yet.

Haven't even touched the other DLCs yet.

Some random notes on changes since release. When training with practice weapons with Bernard, your gear doesn't get beat up nearly as bad. Makes practicing with him much cheaper. You can't ride a horse while being over encumbered. Makes hoovering up all the crap the bandits drop a hassle. All the town vendors have more normal schedules, so there's no more Rattay tailor opening up randomly in the evening and working until 2AM.

Thanks for the run down wormfood. I really liked my run through this game, but since I've finished I haven't had any desire really to give it another go. Same thing happened with Cyberpunk. Most really good games like this I think about playing again, and sometimes do. But with KCD I felt like once was enough. Maybe another run through with the DLC will be worth it. I'll keep an eye out for a sale.

I played through that one 3 times to see which kind of endings I could get and I also played as female for my final run through. Overall the game was a great experience.

Yeah, I liked it too, even if it was not what I wanted it to be in the end. I did allow my expectations to run away a bit in the run-up. But once I accepted the game for what it is, I had a good time with it. Maybe another run with a different build is in the cards, somewhere down the line. It's a good game, and probably better now than it was then.

Map is centered around Kuttenberg and is about twice the size of the original and picks up where the first one left off.

There are two maps, one around the 'Bohemian Paradise' down to Trosky Castle, the other around Kunta Hora - both are 'around' the same size ish as the first KCD map, which is where the double size comes from... There are good technical reasons to keep the map size a 4096 grid as with the first game - so I doubt there will be much significant expansion of the map size, and there may be some 'shaping' of the playable area of the 'smaller' BP-TC map into the more or less north-south alignment of the 'interesting bits'.

Trosky is where Hans and Henry are heading in the Epilogue of KCD - so I assume this is the first chapter of the game, with the Kutna Hora map the second act.

Crossbows, early handguns and blackpowder were demonstrated in the first look presentation.

Wow!!!!!!!!! The first game is such a treasure. One of the finest ARPGs ever made.

They captured the era more authentically and charmingly than any other game has dared do. They sacrificed nothing for wokeness, and it paid off.

Finally getting around to try the From the Ashes DLC.

You can skip it. There's not too much too it. It's not terrible, just a bit of a time/money sink for a while. After Baptism of Fire you can talk to Sir Divish and he'll send out out to help his land agent whom he sent out to survey Pribyslavitz.

Turns out he managed to get kidnapped and for rescuing him and helping him with his survey you're rewarded by being appointed bailiff and tasked to rebuild the town. You're not given any resources for this, so it's own you to pay the workers, negotiate for more materials and convince more people to move there. Once it's all setup it starts making a good sum of money on it's own every couple days. The town itself is also quite nice and it gives you another location with a bed, couple shops and an inventory chest.

Coming back to this game after awhile I'm also struck how nice it looks. Other games might have slightly better animations or character models. Some others look really good but are really fanciful, but the outdoor environments and lighting just look right here. There's fast travel, but I find myself just cruising through on horseback taking in the scenery.

I'm off to try Band of #%&*$# next. The start of that one takes place right after Baptism of Fire as well. Henry comments to Sir Radzig that with the bandit camp clear it's odd that the roads aren't really much safer. Radzig agrees and his plan is to call on an old merc who owes him a favor by the name of Sir Kuno. He's the leader of a rather unscrupulous group and on paper your sent there to act as a liaison and guide, but unofficially to try and keep and eye on them and hopefully keep them in check.

Band of #%&*$# was fun, but also fairly short. You find there's a robber baron who's had beef with Sir Radzig for sometime and is out here causing trouble to make life terrible for Radzig. There's a few tough fights here which can be made tougher by some of your choices. And most of those fights are proper brawls with your band of mercenaries against your enemies in couple small skirmishes and couple large (large by KCD standards) battles. Not sure which DLC I'll try next.
