Here is the latest update I've found on this series which I know several people on SimHQ have been asking about for a few years now. The series was originally going to be on HBO but HBO eventually passed on the project so it went to Apple.

I have been eagerly awaiting this for almost a decade now, but… the trailer is not giving me good vibes. More like Red Tails vibes, and that was a steaming pile of turd. Why are there jets?

I hope I am wrong and that it will be excellent. Tom Hanks doesn’t often get it wrong.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

I hope the African American aviators are not part of the same program. The Eight Air Force did not have African American aviators. The Eight Air Force had fighter wings but the Tuskegee airmen were not part of the Eight Air Force fighter wings.

The USAAF was still segregated during WW2.

But then I see she, a woke black woman, directed two episodes. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2011696/

Then in the cast of those 2 episodes:

Lt. Shelby F. Westbrook

It's this guy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelby_Westbrook

So yes, they included in the series. Better not be all about how they were discriminated and not allowed to fly and fight and all that stuff.

This series is about the 8th Air Force, the bombers crew, not about the Tuskegee airmen.

I must say that you bring up some valid points NFB.

Yup, I noticed that point too and and hope they haven’t woked it.

Sadly, I remember too vividly how Mr. Hanks fumbled and dropped the ball in Greyhound, by letting the German U-boat captain conduct a conversation with the Destroyer captain. nope

After I saw multiple and laughable inaccuracies in the trailer I didn't even bother to watch Greyhound.

The Mighty Eight Air Force museum at Savannah museum has a section on the Tuskegee Airmen. It is understandable even though it is not historical because they were never in the Eight AF. If you don’t already know history it would lead you to believe they were.

I know the Tuskegee Airmen did escort U.S.A.A. F. B-17 and B-24 bombers. But they (the Tuskegee) main area of operation was North Africa, the Mediterrenean and Italy. That was the U.S.A.A.F. 15th Air Force bomber group, not the 8th Air Force.

These are the Tuskegee, part of the 332nd Fighter Group

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuskegee_Airmen

The 4 fighter squadron under the 332nd.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99th_Flying_Training_Squadron

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100th_Fighter_Squadron

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/301st_Fighter_Squadron

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/302nd_Fighter_Squadron

IF you go to Lineage/Stations under those 4 you will see Italy airfields listed, no England and then later no France

Search for Eight or 8th in those 5 Wiki pages and there are none, but there is 15th and Fifteenth.

There's at least some political message in every movie / TV show now, it's to be expected. And it will continue as long as we don't complain too loudly.

+1

I'm grateful that Band of Brothers came out before this moronic woke movement began.

I'm cautiously optimistic with this series, but not because of the so-called "woke" issues. Lets face it, HBO passing on a Tom Hanks project is not a good sign. Second, there are not very many aviation movies, let alone WWII aviation movies, that get it right. Of all the war movie genres, aviation ones seem like the ones that get messed up the most. From Top Gun to Iron Eagle, to Firebirds and Dunkirk. The list goes on and on. Recently, I watched terrible movie Lancaster. Naturally, it was supposed to be about Bomber Command and the struggles of typical RAF bomber crew. Out of 2 hours of film time, only about 15 minutes of it was actual aircraft flying and combat. The opening scene started completely strange. They got attacked by a night fighter and sustained minor damage. The Nav has the crew call-in their status, but AC just stares there, until the Nav asks if he's alright and he acknowledges. They fly all the way back, taxi, then shut the engines down, only for the AC to take his mask off and stare at the Nav. The next scene, an ambulance drives away from the plane and apparently the AC dies. WTF? What pilot would get hit and not tell the crew, especially in a single pilot aircraft! There was no explanation. The movie goes downhill from there, but perhaps was most infuriating was the replacement AC who had flashbacks to his childhood when he was about 8-10 years old. At this age, he and his brother were aircraft fanatics and reminisced about going to an airfield to watch Spitfires take off (mind you, not even Mk 1a Spits, but Mk V and VI variants), hell, they even saw a Lancaster take-off 10-15 years before WWII even started! It was infuriating. How can people make movies so historically inaccurate. Again, this stuff seems to happen more in aviation movies. Whether it was the first Tuskegee Airman movie (the one with an overweight Theo from the Cosby show) that had pilots saying "Far Out!" 20 years before that phrase was cool, or its Pearl Harbor with Ben Affleck pulling a flight stick from one side to the other while the stick is somehow above his head. Hollywood just doesn't get air combat.

And they are made with specific socio-political narratives.

Annnnnnd this whole thread is a great example of why these types of movies and "simulators" aren't made much any more.

It's entertainment people, not a documentary. I personally don't give a rat's arse if they show me a Mark 2.11b-whoevervariant in place of a Mark 3.1a-whatevervariant. Did you see a WW1/WW2/insert-fictional-cold-war-scenario-here era airplane you would not otherwise have seen? Great, mission accomplished. hott pilot

Depicting aircraft types flying a decade before they actually did and incorporating modern slang speech into WWII characters go quite a bit beyond your example.

I think there's a huge difference between a movie like "Patton" using M48's to recreate a WWII tank battle in North Africa because there simply wasn't any other available hardware at the time and a series like "Masters of the Air" including Tuskeegee pilots in a theater of operations that they were never involved in just so all of the woke and diversity check boxes can be filled in by the studio and network.

I hate to break it to all of y'all moaning about the Tuskegee Airmen, but the 99th Fighter Squadron formed with the 332d Fighter Group and did plenty of escort missions into the heart of Germany (as NoFlyBoy pointed out). Totally within reason that they would be included in this series. There were even a couple of ops when the 8th and 15th coordinated their attacks over Germany.

But they weren’t in the 8th AF.

You are really stretching it.

You’re right. Apologies. They never could have crossed paths. Not even once. Totally beyond all possibility. The show will be terrible, I know this after having seen 0 episodes.
