That's an interesting idea for a impromptu competition. Somebody posts a good screenshot and other folks modify it with the art filter of their choice to see what can be done.

Yep, but you have an eye. That last shot is amazing.

This quickly became my favorite thread, and I think we've just taken it to a whole nother level.

Really amazing work. I'm kind of a Gimp gimp, but the painting quality is soooo much better than Photoscape seems capable of.

Just a couple more. I tried these in GIMP, but I still like the Oilify effect fairly low.

Note: Altered screen caps.

Actually, shrunk down you can hardly tell they've been oiled up. On my monitor they look overdone. Go figure.

Finally back from salt mines.
Banjoman and Deacon excellent results.
Mortuus, here's what I came up with. Let me know if you like it.
Public notice: the image has been modified from original source.

Beard, great idea, but more as a curiosity of what people can come up with rather than a competition. Who's going to start a new thread?

Fullofit, I like yours, but do you notice the crosses? For some reason when you use the 'oilify' filter is distorts the edges. I had to fiddle with Mortuus' screenshot to get it where the edges were crisp. Why do you think it does that?

Deacon, I really like your second shot. It looks the box top to a model kit.

Hey Banjoman, I believe it is the process the filter uses to make the image look like a painting - it softens the edges. Perfect example are the clouds if you compare to original the original is much sharper. Same applies to any detail like the crosses. If it is too sharp you will lose the impression of a painting. It's the same with CGI in movies, if they don't do any post-processing it is easy to recognize it's computer generated. Something that helps with our images is higher resolution. You can apply the filter to HD image and it'll still keep more detail. Then it can be down-sampled to the max image size this website is able to host, which is 1600 pixels in horizontal.
Compare the 2 images below. Both had exactly same filters applied with same settings, but the first one had it applied to higher res. image. Second had its filters applied after rescaling image to 1600 pixels. Hopefully you can pick up more detail on the first image, even though the edges are still blurred to get the right effect.

Note: Images are modified from original.

I bumped Gloss from 5 to 7 in the Workshop and to me, it looks like it gives a nice doping shine effect to the aircraft. Couldn't speak to te exact historical accuracy, but it looks cool.

Hellshade, I can't get a single shininess setting to work with all the planes. Seems they all have different levels. On top of that, some parts are much more glossy than others. Makes sense - fabric will be less shiny than metal. I like the level in your pic, not too shiny. I keep mine at default and some parts look chrome. See the cowling in this pic:

The differences in shine could be due to the effect of the in-game shaders??

Sandbagger, I'm not sure what you mean. Are there different shaders for each aircraft, that's why I'm getting different glossiness levels with the same Workshops settings?

I tried just the opposite, I reduced the Gloss down to 3 and bumped the Environment Reflections all the way to 9. I can now see how difficult it would be to find a camouflaged plane against the ground clutter. If I had not been using a Target Lock I would lose them every time.

Beard, I have difficulties seeing the bogies even if they glow. I follow the smoke, heh! burnout

Just a guess - I could be wrong.
It could be the way the different aircraft skins were created by the skinners. Each has his own software preference and techniques, so maybe the various aircraft types react differently with the game shaders.
In the earlier aircraft skins, some has 'lighting' added to replicate what the shaders now do. Could be it's those types of skins that vary to other later skins that don't have this 'lighting' added.

You can see this 'lighting' if you scan through the skins using IfanView. Check the Strutters (as that's the one in your shot) and you can see the 'lighting' texture on the side of the engine cowl.

Does a particular aircraft type vary to another type with the same settings?

Like I say it's a guess and could be a red herring.
