Been thinking about melting it for the Cutlass Blue. Not that I don't like the Super Hornet, I just find myself wondering if it will suit my playstyle. I also own a Gladiator since multi-crew bombing tickles my fancy, but dogfighting...I'm not so sure.
The Cutlass Blue seems like it can do a few different things nicely where as the Super Hornet seems somewhat limited. Having said that, the Super Hornet probably won't come around for a while if at all. Keep the Super or melt it for the Blue?
Thoughts?

I'd guess that they are further along on the Super Hornet.
But yes, if you're looking for more versatility, a Cutlass variant would make sense.

Cutlass is more versatile for sure... but it's a 'Super Hornet'! That'd be a crime to melt it

You can purchase the upgrade without having the main hull first.
The way the upgrades work is that you have to 'apply' them to a ship before you see the upgraded ship in the hangar. If you purchase the upgrade, you'll see it listed in your hangar items list, but you won't see the Cutlass until you purchase it specifically. You will need to apply the Cutlass Blue Upgrade before the game's commercial release though, so you've got some time before it'll need to be used.
There's also the chance that the Cutlass blue will be available in a future sale, most likely when it becomes flyable in the game since it's not a 'limited hull number' sale.
Keep in mind that the ship will be able to be earned in the game too, so you don't have to buy it now. You can wait until the game's release, keep the ship that you have now and just earn UEC (game currency) while playing the game

That's true. I wonder if the specialty ships like the Super Hornet etc. will be earnable in game.

They keep saying so... may be difficult to find, but should be available
from the sale pages: "Remember: we are offering this pledge ship to help fund Star Citizen’s development. All of these ships will be available for in-game credits in the final universe, and they are not required to start the game. Additionally, all decorative ‘flare’ items will also be available to acquire in the finished game world. The goal is to make additional ships available that give players a different experience rather than a particular advantage when the persistent universe launches."

Good to know.
Regarding the Cutlass Blue vs the Upgrade from the Black to Blue path, what is the benefit of picking up the Blue for $165 when you can, I believe, pick up the Upgrade for $50 and the Black for $100. Does the Blue come with extra stuff (maybe the handcuffs and whatnot?)
Thanks for the help, btw!

If you get the $165 item, you're getting the ship, the Advocacy Tools and the game (with credits, beta access, soundtrack, manual, etc) If you've already got another ship/package, then you can save yourself $15 and just get the blue upgrade $50 and the standalone Cutlass Black $100, but you don't get the game (with credits, beta access, soundtrack, manual, etc). If you don't have the game already with another ship/package, you won't be able to fly in Arena Commander. Not sure if the Advocacy Tools come with the upgrade
You need at least one package, but you can have several standalone ships (found under the 'Extras' dropdown menu in the Pledge Store)
