Sorry for OT. Should we start a bibliography thread? I'd say yes, good idea. Posting book sugestions here just clogs the wish-list thread with off-topic posts, and not having these excellent book ideas in a dedicated thread means the whole book discussion is pretty much lost in the clutter.

A wonderful cover art for the book, but actually is a colorized version of the actual pic, where both the pilot and the gunner where just simply ready to take off. Anyway, I think Fe2 B gunners did not know the term "vertigo".

Just to be clear, that fixed forward-firing Lewis on the FEE posted above cannot shoot the obs' jewels. That's just forced perspective in that photo. Although grainy, here's the same airplane:  BTW, I know, ah, somebody who has colorized that previously posted photo up there for inclusion in a pending book. Back to the intent of this thread, a great read is Bloody April, Slaughter in the Skies over Arras, 1917, by Peter Hart.

Lots of discussions about books here, lately, and it will sure doesn't help my "to read" pile of books to decrease  Among them I have: - KEKs and Fokkerstaffels by Johan RyheulOnly had a quick look, but it seems great, with pictures and locations of early german fighter units along the front. - Somme Sucess by Peter Hart- Red Baron, The Life and Death of an Ace, by Peter KilduffI liked his book about Carl Degelow ( Black Fokker Leader), and if it is the same quality I won't be disapointed (plus it was selled at a very cheap price) - Mémoires by Roland GarrosA recently published book, there only a few pages at the end about the war-his war diary until his capture, but he had a quite hectic life before that. Now, some books(in french) about french pilots that I have read and that I liked: Charles de Rose, le pionner de l'aviation by Jean-Noël Grandhomme & Thérèse KrempLe Corsaire de l'Air, Maurice Happe et la naissance du bombardement stratégique by Gilles KruglerThe two were pionneers in their kind. Charles created the first fighter squadron, Maruice tried to set up a strategic bombing force. These two books are universitarian works, and they don't only focus on the war. The one on Happe tells more about tactics, formations used etc...that the one about de Rose but both are interesting. The last one is also in french, but even if you don't read it, is worth having it. Sous les Cocardes, by Marcel JeanJeanAnd I am forced to put some pictures:    In about 30 pages, JeanJean (who was a pilot in Esc33 in 1917/18) describes the life of a pilot, during his formation then in Escadrille, with great 'pre ligne claire' style humoristic drawings and with some little explicative texts. A really nice book. It can be found quite easily (I got mine at my local bookstore) but the price varies, older editions can be sold up to 700 euros (these have a preface from Georges Madon), newer are about 40/50 euros.
