Mine are:
1. My first kill in Air Warrior (the old one on GEnie). Total online newb... jumped a BF109 with a P51 Mustang from alt, sweating, elevated heart rate.

2. My second Air Warrior kill (death actually). Engaged up in a defensive turn-fight that lasted an eternity, went from alt into the weeds, I ended up kissing dirt, same feeling as above

3. My ride in a mil-spec F/A-18 demonstrator (developed by Reflectone) during an engineering expo at USF

4. My ride in a Kiowa simulator (a few years later at another engineering expo). The engineer asked, "Do you have helo experience?" My reply, "Yeah, I learned to fly in a sim called Longbow 2."

5. My first tank up in EF2000

1) The original Gunship by Andy Hollis.

I flew this one on my dad's 4.77Mhz (yes, Virginia, that is a decimal point) XT with a monochrome monitor and keyboard. I eventually got good enough that my mission selection looked something like this:

Keep in mind that this sim actually deactivated your pilot if you died in the mission, so you were putting your character on the line every time you accepted a mission.

One particular mission I flew had the above criteria (Hazardous mission w/ the 3rd AD) I had loaded up with 16 Hellfires, 2 sidewinders (AIM-9 was used instead of AIM-92 in GS), and a full belt of 30mm Hate and Discontent. I bagged both primary and secondary objectives, but took a SAM hit on the second objective and had to limp home. However, the BMP platoon was still popping SAMs at me, so I turned around and engaged them. I had no Hellfires left, so I was down to the 30mm chaingun, which sufficed beautifully. I ended up burning just about all of my chaingun rounds, then headed back to the FARP, bagging a Hind along the way. So I was heading back with a damaged bird, a fuel leak, and my offensive capability was limited to screaming obscenities over the radio! I was thinking that "this is it, my awesome character is about to get wiped out" when i started getting more indications of damage. I could barely control the bird (and this was with a keyboard on high realism settings), but somehow got the FARP in sight and got in position for hover. Just as I was about 30 feet, my engine died and I landed hard.

I thought for sure I would see this:

but instead, the screen that came up was:

I also received a Purple Heart for that mission, and at that point I had every decoration and campaign ribbon in the game!

2) Su-27 Flanker by ED/SSI (the origin of DCS)
For the first time, I discovered a sim that if I pulled the stick into my lap, I would exceed my desired AoA and my plane would slow its turn, and easing up on the stick would increase my turn rate. This was another eye-opener for me into realistic flight dynamics.

3) Flanker 2.0
One quick mission I recall was when I was fighting a furball of MiG-23s in the Su-27. I was pulling lead on a -23, and kicked in a little rudder to refine my gun solution, when I was hit in one of my engines by another -23. This resulted in an unrecoverable yaw, and I remember seeing my AoA go to max and my airspeed go to 0, and the screen start to go in circles. My first reaction was "So this is what a flat spin looks like." and next the realization that this was the first time I'd actually seen a legitimate spin in a flight sim (with the proper indications and everything), much less a flat spin. I don't think I ever enjoyed ejecting from an aircraft as much as I did that day.

4) Many a Falcon 4.0 campaign mission whose realism would remind me of my operational flying days, and where the sound of the AAA would have me jump in my seat.

5) Edit (almost forgot): That first time in IL-2 where I lined up 4 O'clock high on the enemy bomber, got the perfect lead on the wingroot, and made a slashing attack that took the wing right off. Shots like that are like the perfect golf shot; you can have a lot of bad shots, but those keep you coming back.

Thats a nice story HomeFries! Thanks for sharing.

My best sim moments were in the old European Air War ( first meeting with a B-17 box formation with Lightnings as escorts)

- Falcon 4BMS (first use of the sniper pod)

- Longbow (Panama missions, and specially my first succesful autorotation)

- Strike Fighters (banging a Israeli Phantom with a Mig-21 gun is one of my best simming kills)

And yes, I also think there are no sims like they they did years before. Rivet counters killed the industry.

Just looking at the screen-shot of Gunship reminds me of probably the first sim I owned. It was 'Harrier Combat Simulator' for the Atari ST. I just had to look it up,I was convinced my first sim was B-17 for the PC.That was a long time ago, memory is a little 'sketchy'.

The landscape was totally flat with 'triangles' for hills, just like Gunship.I always remember the review I read of it at the time (can't remember the mag, maybe C&VG?) where the reviewer stated what a thrill he got by flying between 2 hills at high speed.

And I suppose for that reason,it probably was my first (and best) sim experience.

Hmmm... how can it be "best" if there are loads of them? smile

For me, in no particular order:
1. Carrier landings in Jane's F/A-18. I had no clue how to fight at that time.
2. Completing a mission and finally a campaign in EECH.
3. Flying low over a forest in EECH, then stumbling across an enemy tank battalion making their way through the forest road... taking out the lead tanks as I fly past, then setting up to ambush and finish the job.
4. Doing the above in Gunship!
5. A good co-op mission in DCS A10C. I know I diss this sim a lot, but I think it was simply a stepping stone for me to prepare me for BMS. I played AF years ago but couldn't get back into it and if I went straight to BMS, I probably would've been overwhelmed by all the switchology.
6. Almost any mission in BMS where I learn something new. Or execute a plan cleanly. One of the fun missions I flew with the 72nd VFW was called KYC - Kill Your Commander. It was basically us vs. the squadron leaders and higher ups in the 72nd. They were to protect an asset (a depot) and we were tasked to destroy it. Our first two waves were shot down in quick order, but my third flight, I had two guys fly up high while I flew NOE directly below them. The enemy got distracted long enough for me to sneak in and bomb the target. Another was when I learned how to dodge A-A missiles.... did a lot to help my confidence in BVR fights.

For me it would have to be:

-spending hours flying in Microprose's F15 Strike Eagle on a C64/128. I wore out the cassette tape of the Top Gun soundtrack...my wife had even picked up a joystick for me!
-discovering more WWI map lands by flying through the 'ether' in MS first flight sim
-painting my own skins in IL-2 and running mp co-op missions over Stalingrad with m8s
-launch of Rise of Flight and loving it with TIR my wife suggested I get (same wife ^.^), and having a m8 point me in OFF's direction and the amazing campaign experience therein (now in WOFF)-- two awesome WWI sims that brought back a lot of memories from years earlier.
- RW2/Trainsimulator for non-flying, along with ARMA series for reliving humping a pack, and FSX (Air Hauler)for those truly civvy moments biggrin
-flying jets in Strike Fighters 2 that were the elite when I was a kid and being able to fly recent jets in DCS Flaming Cliffs 2 (now 3)

Within each there are a ton of great experiences plus the added bonus of meeting a bunch of great players over the years, some of whom I still stay in contact with smile

Well, I started the whole thing on C-64.
1, completing my first mission in Project Stealh Fighter.

2, finishing the training in F14-Tomcat, and earning my Fighter Pilot wings (took some time).

3, Spending enormous time with learning to fly and fight with DI's f-16 combat pilot (the first RTFM moment)

4, Completing all missions in CYAC (Yes, had a lot of freetime 20 years ago...:) ).

5, First multiplayer experience: Red Baron 3D. I still remember the thrill of the first kill. Wrote a simple "S!" in the chat window before jumping around the room screaming in joy.

6 Long nights with Ef2000. I do realise, immersion is really important!

And a lot of other stuff since then. I have a bad habit buying most of the sims, but do not have the time to fly them anymore. Still going back to IL2 1946 occasionally, flying PWCG campaign in ROF and taking the Huey for a ride in DCS.

Best experiences of Sim- Gaming...
Lemme think:

1) Ace of Aces for C64- barely a kid (6 or 7 years old), being italian and playing a pirated and english game.
And. Completing. My. First. Mission! O.O Screaming same stuff I heard in Memphis Belle at german fighters. biggrin

I felt like a God.

2) F16 Combat Pilot as Staniol up here, the first game I needed to read a manual for. Impressive!
But seriously the pilot was an entity with a past and hopeful for a future! It was an eyes-opening, mind-broadening experience. Since that "first-contact" all the other games that didn't allow me for such coherence were simply sold or gifted to my friends.

Not to forget it was my first real landing. Speed, circuit and all. I felt pretty good overall!

3) Goes without saying I plunged headfirst into C64 version of Elite. The supreme immersive experience... Just to realise a 9 year old italian with an Enlish game that relied on language was a total waste.
My father spent good money to give me the Original just see me givin'up in frustration. frown

My kids speak 3 languages at 3 years of age. biggrin I'll not repeat the same mistake my parents did...
Thankfully I'm making up with Elite Dangerous.

4) Then my first PS2/IBM arrived. 13MHz, 1 MB of RAM and the humongous 60MB HDD! biggrin
I was happy as a... well kid. I was around 12 and suddenly games were in such a higher resolution, POLYGONS!, and proper sounds! A cultural shock. Despite some light sim, as Ambraham Battle Tank and some LHX or SU25 Shturmovik, I ended up with Chuck Yeager Air Combat.

Oh. Boy. That was it. I could run it full detail, with a joystick and it felt just too good to be true.
Three campaigns, in different times, a mission editor, a real ace in the back seat givin'me tips and unlimited amount of fun!

Landing became a routine, I learned the principles of energy management and generally it felt so right...
After I did all the missions back and forth I still fired it up to face those 15 angry enemy aces at the lowest altitude in a disadvantageous position. And coming on op of it, albeit heavily damaged, most of the times!

I worn out its manual, disks and the box too! biggrin

5) The sudden realisation I was still a pretty awful pilot came with the next true milestone, Falcon 3.0.

Oh Gods, where to begin. Everything was an humbling, but very formative experience. It really built me as a person, no matter how silly that sounds... Suddenly the cramped maps of Chuck Yeager's Air combat were gone.
The flimsy flight models too, the generous weapon behavior of other games, the fierce aggressiveness of those enemy fighters, all I learned so far was a thing of the past. But the joy...
I still have a small paper notebook with my squadron info, the pilots I renamed and picked photos for, their skills, even some back stories... I was nuts for it. I bought it with MY MONEY and original too. I still have the box and all... With the First expansion in Japan/Kurile Islands...

Then the crash. Family issues and really bad times took an heavy toll and for several decades after videogaming was a little thing.
But once more I came on top of it. Stupid as it sounds, I knew I could face russian aggression high above the skies... those mere trouble in life where nothing next to the experiences I had... It really helped.

But then history is becoming too recent, outside the scope of the OP and thread.
Future was waiting for me with one more game... Il2-Sturmovik.

Seeing DI's Tornado on a friend's 386 back in 1993 made me buy a 486SX Packard Bell PC because all other sims at the time paled in comparison. Planning and flying my first mission on my own PC was immensely satisfying at the time.

My first kill online in Air Warrior III was a great moment.

My first experience with a Track-IR.. a real game changer.

I'm guessing there will be another one of those milestone moments when the Oculus Rift becomes available and I finally get my hands on one.

I would include the training I have to do in simulators for work (it's a pretty big high when you walk out of a final sim session with a shiny new type rating), but that's work rather than play.

I'm sure there are some I'm forgetting, but there's what I can remember now (in no particular order):

1. Flying "Jet" on my Atari ST against a friend using modems, my first head-to-head combat with each person in a different location.

2. Going to my first ComDEX and checking out the Atari booth, and seeing Falcon for the Atari ST before it was released. Then getting it and it matching my expectations. And then playing it against my roommate with a null-modem cable.

3. Actually figuring out Falcon 3.0 and being able to really fly a full mission, and blow stuff up.

4. Flying MS Combat Flight Simulator 2 against a friend of mine who insisted on flying simplified rules. He was killing me, and gave me a hard time about how he was beating someone with a lot of flight simulator experience. I told him it's because I only fly in full realism normally, and it just didn't work the way I expected in simple mode. So we switched to full realistic settings, and I toasted him.

5. I'm not sure this fully qualifies, but I was playing the Mechwarrior series, and I think it was MW2: Mercenaries where you played an Inner Sphere mercenary and the Clans show up. It just wasn't what I expected, and went beyond the normal mission play. Then you get captured, and have to escape and fight your way out in a hover tank - again, just a little different than the mission-to-mission play you normally have.

Oh, and i forget my two most impulsive simulator enjoyment:
Aces of the deep: The real Das boot experience on Pc in the 90's

Then Silent Hunter 3 convoy attack on full real. It's a real cold s*** fear in my abdomen.

The first book what i read (i was 7) is a hungarian book on submarine combat of the WW1 and WW2. Tengerek szürke farkasai from Gyula Sárhidai (Gray wolfs of the oceans). It's a really good beginner book, it makes me want to be a submariner. But without sea around my country it was only a dream, until Aotd and SH3.

I still wait for a comparable warship combat simulator.(Since 1994 :-) )

It's funny that you mentioned Aces of the deep. I recently started replaying it (under DOSBox) in carrer mode in full realism. After few patrols in type II I received opportunity to command type IX. I've played the game before but never have completed career mode all the way till the end of the war. Despite aging graphics the game still is immersive with great gameplay. True classic.

Regarding Aces of the Deep - same here ... one of my best sim experiences was to listen to 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary' (with the in-game radio) after a successful convoy hunt, late at night, somewhere in the middle of the virtual North Atlantic.

Cheers,
