We're going to try this again.

Here are the rules:

1) Please discuss the topic only in this thread.

2) DO NOT go personal with the comments.

3) Save your energy for the next dogfight, not insults and name calling.

Good debating a topic doesn't include personal insults. Once you start with the personal crap, you just lost the debate, and show you have less self-control than the person(s) you're debating.

Realize everything at this point is speculation until an announcement is made by the developers and publisher(s).

With all due respect guod, as the RoF developers have not stated anything at all on copy protection other then logging in for online statistics etc, couldn't this thread by called "RoF copy protection speculation" or something? As is, it sort of suggests that its a given.

I think it's a waste of time, there are much more interesting and less controversal subjects to talk about, but hay, have fun, if this is what really interests you all. reading

DRM or not, I'm buying this simulation regardless. As long as the simulation works on my computer, that's all that matters. I will not miss this sim. No way!

I think I pretty much said all that I want to say in the other thread. Can I just post a link in this thread pointing to the old one just in case it falls off the front page into obscurity?

The only one that will stop me buying is SF, but I'd sure like an official response of some kind as to whether CP/DRM has been chosen yet and if so what form it will take as regards to possibility of limited installs, online verification (be it upon launch, once a week, constant etc etc) and the ability to play it on more than one system (obviously not at the same time with the same copy).

Well, the only thing I cay in here is that, no matter the subject I cannot make myself dislike any other poster who has an opinion different to mine. Compared to all the other important issues facing us these days in this world, RoF copy protection is really a very minor thing. That's always been very clear to me. I myself am rather open to an online user verification every time I play the sim. If others think it is the end of personal freedom then so be it: as long as we agree on other important issues I can live with that discrepancy of opinion.

It's pretty simple, really, just wait till the game comes out, then see if the copy protection, if any, is giving problems to anyone. Like I said, why spend all this time and paranoia "speculating" on something that may not even happen, or may not even be a problem?

All I can say is that I don't believe my purchase of a game includes DRM or CP. I'll take whatever steps required to bypass it, and if that's not possible, I won't purchase the game.

I agree with the paranoia bit.

But copy protection is part of the product, whether its in or out. We have discussed FMB, plane sets, business models etc, and all these initially surfaced informally or through speculation. CP is no different.

To some, CP is very important. To others it may not be at all. But most would have mixed feelings. Far better its all discussed(?) now. For example I agree with dano above, SF could be the wrong decision for more people then say something else.

I think it would be wise of the developers to consider comments in this area, and then at some point advise us of their plans, as they did with many other product features that emerged thru informal means. It would be difficult if they did release something with CP that surprised us all, even if it was done for all the right reasons, yet left many feeling uncomfortable - a PR disaster or even worse. Even their biggest fans, me included, wouldn't want that I suspect.

Communication between a fan base and developers is a good thing IMO.

But it's already been discussed in every folder on this board pretty much. Every time a new product's released there's a DRM thread started and an influx of new posters to that thread that seem to have no other interest in the product than to rage about generalised DRM issues. There seems to be a section of this community that roam accross the board looking for DRM threads to express their own opinion in, over and over.

Maybe we need a general DRM folder where they can all rage at each other till they get bored.

I totally agree with Mogster

For my part I'll be buying RoF, what kind of DRM (or not) won't affect that decision.

I will buy ROF,period.
AND I´m a supporter of copy protection.
We don´t have too much skilled artists like this willing to do masterpieces like ROF and it makes me feel like I´m doing something to help to stop piracy.
Too bad if the truth is: pirates or drug dealers(same thing) doesn´t exists if people simply doesn´t buy what they sell.
Unfortunally ,the entire world suffers from a chronic ethics crysis.

Or maybe that selection of posters is actually happy with how the sims are progressing and therefore have nothing to add but do have feelings on how the choice of DRM/CP will affect their purchase and playtime, if it wasn't worth discussing it wouldn't get any discussion. If you think it's a pointless discussion why even bother coming and reading a thread that is obviously about DRM/CP and then further post in said topic, you are all guilty of continuing this discussion even though you say it's pointless, why, surely if you really felt that you'd just ignore the topic and carry on discussing something you feel is worthy of your time?

EDIT: I know there are some who as you say are out to do nothing but cause trouble, but that does not stop this from being a valid discussion and lumping anybody who has an issue with DRM/CP and wishes to have an adult discussion on the topic into the same group as them is just not on.

I'm posting about it because of the negative impact that trolling/moaning has on the board.

I'll be the first to complain about CP/DRM when I have a personal problem with the system employed. Too much of the posting is either trolling or just generalised wingeing about the whole concept. Anything that doesn't deal with ROF's CP/DRM directly is off topic in here imo. As the dev's haven't released many details of the systems they intend to use then that limits sensible discussion quite a lot.

I'll be buying ROF whatever CP/DRM system they employ. If it impinges on my enjoyment of the game in any way I'll be in here making a direct complaint about it from my own experience.

That's the best and most reasonable comment I've read in this whole discussion, including in the closed topic.

DRM/CP aren't inerently bad or good, safe or evil.... they are just software tools, as any other software tools (and as any kind of tools).
So as tools, they can be used well (giving a relative protection against copy in a not too short among of time AND not creating troubles for the end user).... or they can be a week protection and a real pain for the end users.

Let's wait for neoqb annoucement or the game release to know if they use DRM as CP... and if it's the case, let's wait for game release to see if, whatever method used, if it's painless or a real problem for some users (that we will see with the amound of complains on the forums).

Excellent idea Goud.

This should be the standard MO for forums where copy protection might be an issue. Put one thread for it and leave it there.

Now as with Black Shark these threads can grow quite large, a humble suggestion would be to put a synopsis of what's known about the DRM in the game, near the top of the thread.
So newbies don't have to read 500 articles of he said she said.

At this point I think it would contain one line;

No DRM system has been decided on.

This is an important subject, but I don't understand why posting here would make any difference.
A couple folks say they won't buy the sim if it has this or that protection scheme.

Why not start an online petition to make your voice heard and post it on the developers site where it might make more of a difference. Although the devs visit here at simHq, I doubt if the publisher would - and they don't want to lose sales.
