It was suggested we play OFP again on a regular basis. Anyone interested?

Cool. We tried playing some GR, but it was a tad dry after awhile. The AI is brain dead, the only way they can make them harder is to position them around corners or under cover.

OFP would be great to get going again. BTW, G, that Cent Com mod for GR looks pretty good. Also, the campaign missions in GR are a lot easier and less compelling than a number of the user made missions on the net. We really should give some a try, and see what you think.
The AI in OFP can, in a lot of situaitons be pretty feeble. For instance, guys run around in the open after you take down one of their buddies - rather than taking cover. On the other hand, they seem pretty alert to you while on their patrol routines. And you can hop in vehicles and drive and fight them...you can lift your foot up high enough to climb over a one foot rock (unlike your Special Forces GR alter ego), or climb the highest peaks on the very large maps.
Both tac sims have their strengths, and their weaknesses.

If you want to suggest some better GR maps that would be great. SpaceMarine and Dirk are up for some OFP though.

Me too. They are both enjoyable perhaps in different ways, although I think a lot of people find OFP to be a bit more realistic.
By the way, thanks again for being such a gracious host the other night. And for your assistance in getting that Cent Com mod.

No problem. We should do it again, just not sure which game. I like COOP missions for sure.

I'll start the wheels rolling for some OFP. Maybe get the server setup for that as well. I might build a second server this week (eventual present for my dad). I have enough spare parts, just need a CPU.

hey that's cool with me, i usually play vanilla anyway. the only mod i really even touch anymore is ECP but I agree with you and that's been the problem with OFP for a long time and now with ArmA as well: no 2 players have the same bleeding configuration. i hate going onto the OFP server browser and seeing a bunch of abbreviations for crap i need to download so i can play, i don't even know what most of that junk is.
custom maps, though, i'm all for!

Count me in.
I've never played OFP online before. But I'd love to now. From 02. April on I'd be all ready for it.
Btw., I totally agree with Hardcore. OFP (Resistance) pure vanilla is the way to go.

MFCTI 1.16: Does everyone who would be interested know what this is, and what it's for?
Like Ojokoltsa said, to keep things simple and encourage broadest participation, why not just start with vanilla final OFP Resistance patched? There are some mods that are "transparent" in multiplayer, that is, makes no difference to other players on line that you have it, so long as you are not putting up a custom mission that builds in weapons from that mod, etc. Seems as if those would be fine also.

That does sound like a good mission mod, and good advantages for co-op.

Maybe this is premature. I don't think so tho...
I remember now, it was +G who brought this up last time and after the first meeting never did show up for it again.
I put a lot of work into a one-click installer and uploaded it to his site for everyone. I never did see it addressed with a link, never did hear from him again, and we never did play.
1 person (I forget who) went off on a mod tangent on comms with me and eventually drifted away. Where the six others who had expressed interest went, I have no idea - It never happened.
But I was there, every day, bangin away at making a unified install possible for everyone, and clerifying for everyone whatever needed clarifying - workin hard at trying to motivate a return to OFP. Trying to rally us for a simple single simultaneous meeting.
In the end - no one returned. There's no way i could blame myself, no matter how hard i tried. I don't recall verbalizing my frustration then - like i said, never even had a chance. This was something else. VAMPIRES. 15 year old #%&*$# i guess with no sense of respect for other people. People who use other people for their cheap thrills to get them through their moments of boredom on the internet before their parents kick them off the comp for school tomorrow. People who say they have interest and "Let's do it!" and "I'll be there!"; but say it in 6 other forums and games as well, and hop from one cheap thrill to another with no respect for the people who work hard to make them happen. It's disgusting, and I am disgusted.
Next time somebody mentions online OFP or any other game/sim, I'm gonna take the first exit i find to avoid the vampires - and be thankfull for the "stupid AI" who only want to kill me - not suck my blood and life's energy just to get themselves on through to the next cheap thrill.
Too bad...
But it is what it is. A waste of effort.
EDIT I'll leave this post here since it has been refered to.

PS: G has done more for this and other communities than most of us put together. There you go, you just proved my point exactly. For some it's just a game. For others it's hard work and commitment. You don't appreciate what I put in, that's ok. Won't waste another minute is all I've said. Happy trails Eugene.

Well, I'm not sure who proved what, but speaking only for myself, you have no idea what I appreciate or do not. *Games* can indeed provide a kind of fun that involves hard work and committment. Whether people in this forum decide that they want to or don't want to go online and play with you or anyone else is their business. They've got lives, friends, family, work and whatever the heck else they've got going. It certainly isn't an insult to you or anyone else.

Sure:
Decisions by people in the forum as to whether they choose to play on line with you or anyone else are unrelated to whether they appreciate the work you or G put into a game. They've got lives, friends, family, work and whatever the heck else they've got going. Their and my availablities and choices certainly aren't intended as an insult to you or anyone else.
In other words - don't take it personally.

Come on guys, no need for this.
Listen Hardcore, sorry it didn't work out, sorry you feel that way, not much I can do about it I guess given the tone in one of your postings in here. You should really have spoken up then and there if you felt that strongly about it. I hope I'm just misreading what you said, but I'm reading you directing those comments squarely at me.
Part of the problem, as Eugene mentioned it, is trying to get the time to play these sims on a regular basis with a regular group of players. When you throw in distractions like all the gorgeous new games coming out of the PC and 360 and my willingness to buy them, family and work, well it's just not easy anymore. I'm afraid my OFP may yet again be spotty (Stalker is installed, and Silent Hunter IV is in the mail for example).
Last time it died a slow death for me because the 360 came on the scene. Now to be fair, it's not true that we didn't play one single game either, because we did. I remember this mod, we tried it, yes. It was different, certainly made things interesting at the time, but OFP was new to me, still is. I've never even finished one campaign yet and that's a shame. Jeevz certainly had a bigger appreciation for it because he's a pro at the game, I'm not.
My gaming cycles got ate up and still do, like I worked all last weekend for the most part, now I have the flu so this weekend is probably a right off too. Now as with most cycles I find myself wanting a tad more than a console can give on occasion, thus back to the PC. Then I'll get tired of patch this, adjust that, document the other thing, build the server here, punch a hole in a firewall there, etc. So gaming wise, I'm all over the map, always have been, always will be. Different strokes for different folks. Some days I'm about two shakes of a wags tail from ditching gaming, then I'll come to my senses. I have one life to live and when you reach a certain age you start to wonder if it's just a waste. I'm at that point, my mid life gaming crisis. Ha.
So to get back to HardCore's beef, yes I tried your install package and if I remember correctly, it didn't work 100% on my machine properly, but it did work OK, I've upgraded a bit since then though. I also tried some of Jeevz texture updates and that didn't work for me either and I know what I'm doing. I can't imagine what a novice goes through with this game. No link was given on my site because we just tried it, that's as far as it went, interest dropped off. In fact I probably don't even have that zip file anymore, we never got to that point as you observed. I haven't distributed it to ANYONE since for that matter.
So to be clear, I'm not "stealing" your work. If that's what you're implying, I don't have a commercial site or any interest in profiting from your work for my own gain. Man that would be the lowest of the low, I certainly hope you're not thinking that was the case, because if you are, you're WRONG. As far as never hearing from me again, the personal message link still works on this board and I'm easy to find on these boards.
I think the point you made originally is valid and bang on. Keep it Simple Stupid. Once you veer off that path things crash and burn and people loose interest in the ini file patch hunt game REAL quick.
Now this particular thread was brought up by me because I started to play GR again (Eugene and I played the other night it was fun) and that got me thinking about OFP. My brother and a friend I regularly play with also want to try it again (I think I'll start with them, then expand the circle if the interest holds). I think this game is an acquired taste, like fine wine, you need to take your time to get used to it, and to be fair I haven't.
With GR the usual complaints about the AI got to us again and we quickly became board of the duck hunting it became, thus the "feeler" in this thread for OFP interest. I appreciate the work you did HardCore, don't get me wrong and sorry you think I'm a Vampire, I'm not the type of person to "use" another person. That's not me at all and I'll celebrate my 15th Birthday's, 27th anniversary this year, do the math! ;-) Man, if I could only measure/count the time and blood I've let out for this hobby .. so you're not alone. I wasted weeks and weeks on one game to document a stable install for everyone to use, it was satisfying at the time.
That hard work you posted here, should still be in an archive on this board somewhere, so you don't have to reinvent the wheel, just turn on the light switch. There appears to be an interest, so any and all feel free to post a date and rally the troops.

Yup that about sums it up for me too. I had a feeling it might. I had already answered at length late at night and thought maybe too much length and retracted it temporarily till I had a chance to think about how to express it better. Hence, the "......." Came back and found this statement of yours. I guess you think yourself too good for me. Eugene's comments also sounded like he and others (probably you) had been discussing it and had concluded that you and others on the forum here (as he put it) had decided they did not want to get online with me; and I sure as hell don't waste my self on people like that. So I wont bother with an answer now. Just so anyone else reading this goofy thread knows why.

All I read was ".......". Since I didn't know what the heck "......." meant, who would, I thought I'd make light of it with my reply.
Eugene and you going back and forth, that took place AFTER my last post on the 20th, my next reply was on the 28th, which was when I picked up and read the thread again. Do you honestly think anyone would sit back and not reply to something like that, certainly not after what you said in your Vampire post?
I had no contact with Eugene before my reply on the 28th, my reply was from my own free will. No one has or is organizing a site wide anti-Hardcore campaign if that's what you're thinking.
Your imagination is starting to get the best of you. So rather than leave any more to your imagination I'll ask the mods to delete this completely wacky off the rails thread (or do it myself) and repost my original question for discussion.
