A special thanks to Dels for letting YAP use your C-130 and put a great pixel plane to use. We have at least 3 other combat missions planned for it.

Your name is over the door as Crew Chief.

You might have gone a little overboard with the soldiers there for a flight sim, but otherwise absolutely fantastic.

Says you.....I think they are great. Anything to add immersion to the sim.

Question: When was the last time you spotted a tiny man out of your cockpit doing 300+ knots?
Great model but nice as it looks it's great for screenshots but little else. MHO

I've trouble spotting vehicles on the ground being unable to even recognise the type. So the effort in such detailed models is somewhat wasted on me.

That cargo drop thing appeals me ;\) .

Re: Khe Sanh by Yankee Air Pirate - 10/11/06 12:28 PM

I suppose that if you use F7 to view ground targets then it looks better - the original gunners in the game look quite good anyway so best to keep it consistent. The soldiers in F4:AF are flat and look cr*p - though I only know this because I use target to view plane sometimes - so it does obviously improve immersion for some of us \:\)

Actually, I see them all the time. Use them as a height reference doing low levels.

Well you haven't been around us long enough to appreciate the workmanship put into it. Thus why it is lost on you. People want more detail, they get it and still b*tch about it.

Re: Khe Sanh by Yankee Air Pirate - 10/11/06 01:36 PM

Brilliant to have the detail! Bring it on. Also, not all aircraft are buzzing past at 300 knots. Cobras and Hueys, Spads, A-37s. 'I see them...'

Re: Khe Sanh by Yankee Air Pirate - 10/11/06 03:18 PM

I have seen people while flying 500 knots at 500 feet pulling 5 G's (dodging flak that looked like Yankee Air Pirate flak). I doubt they had a pack of Luckies rolled up in the sleeve of their t-shirt or a pin-up of Racquel Welch nearby but if I had F7, I would have looked.

If you don't like detail, reality and the ability to believe for a moment that you are really there, you are going to hate Yankee Air Pirate. Ours are real flights by real men against real enemies. You cannot reproduce that often enough with the stock WOV package.

But you can stage a fight between a Viggen and a Mirage in a war that never happened over terrain with...wait a minute. Are those trees? and leaves on the trees? And shingles on the roofs? Why am I the only one on this airport? Why aren't there any other airplanes on the ground or in the pattern?

See? You have noticed it too.

Re: Khe Sanh by Yankee Air Pirate - 10/11/06 03:29 PM

Hey zerocinco I'm definitely in favour of as much detail in the game as possible. One thing that you mentioned there caught my attention particularly, the fact about the static aircraft on the ground. What static aircraft are there on the ramp in YAP?
Posted by: SandyC

Re: Khe Sanh by Yankee Air Pirate - 10/11/06 04:11 PM

Since getting YAP, I have airbases with F-105s, F-4s, F-100s and even a chartered Pan Am Boeing 707 on the ramp. In one mission, I have 16 Thuds lining up to take off and a ramp jammed with static planes. Looks fantastic as you take off and look down at flightlines and a bustling base.
Posted by: zerocinco

Re: Khe Sanh by Yankee Air Pirate - 10/11/06 04:12 PM

So far, whatever Paul Taylor can get to sit straight after the patch. In Misty, F-100's. Usually F-4's on alert in Diego's drive-through revetments at Danang. A-1s and C-130 at Hue. C-47's here and there. UH-1B's. MiG's up north. Thuds at Korat and Takli. Phantoms in various skins at Ubon. B-52's and KC-135's at U Tapao. 707's at the terminal at Danang.

It is easier for us to just send the _DATA.INI and have the player drag and drop the big stuff into the folder. The README makes it easy.

We try to put the complex statics in the logical views of the player. If we can get some simple stuff, we will put them in revetments farther away as terrain objects. Getting things like that (and cockpits) is not as easy as it seems. These guys do such great work because they are doing what entertains them. If I said, make me a C-123 static, they would block my email.

But if you want a mortar to go "thoomp!" or a bunch of dead guys around a gun you hit, no problem.

Re: Khe Sanh by Yankee Air Pirate - 10/11/06 04:18 PM

I should have mentioned that we also put things like Conex boxes, crates, tool boxes, fire trucks, pallets, ambulances, alert shacks, passenger terminals and now (thanks to Kesselbrut) have lighted trucks driving around the ramp on those night missions. Next map, we will have more people just hanging around.

When we get to the point that you take this kind of thing for granted, we are as close to real as TK's engine and your processor will allow us to take you.

Re: Khe Sanh by Yankee Air Pirate - 10/11/06 04:49 PM

I have to update the CEO (Boss) on whats in the YAP Static AC inventory. He cant keep track of of it all Those two 23 yr old (female)secretaries just sit around all day looking like "employee of the month" YAP has every stock WOV AC as a static and then some. To be used at your discretion, Boss.

Re: Khe Sanh by Yankee Air Pirate - 10/11/06 08:40 PM

I posted this at C5's site back in November 2005

'Is there any way you guys could come up with an inert weapon with a 3d model of a paratrooper? That way we could simulate airdrops from our C-130s, An 12s and whatever other transports turn up. I'm guessing they would be like parachute retarded bombs or such but you're the experts.

You could also do cargo containers or even those grain bags you see getting pushed out of the back of transports on famine relief flights.

Just think of the scenarios:

- You're scrambling in a Hurricane to help stem the German invasion of Crete as Ju 52s fill the skies

- You're flying the first wave of the 101st Airborne over Normandy in your C-47, or flying a supply drop to the beleagured troops at Arnhem

- You're flying defence suppression for a C-130 dropping supplies into Khe San in your F-4

- You're flying escort for a famine flight en route to Ethiopia as it transits Libyan airspace (a bit of a crib of Richard Herman's 'The Warbirds')

- You're flying a C-130 on a Special Forces insertion outside Tehran as the Iranian airforce scrambles around you.

I remember playing EA's Birds of Prey where you could fly the C-130 and drop paras or low level cargo delivery and spent hours dodging SAMs and bandits to get the cargo on target. I'd love to try it with the Strike Fighters engine...'

Looks you guys got it to work. Well done. I'm pretty much sold on YAP - expect a new customer soon.

Actually what is going on on the ground was one of the big draws for SF, AFAIWC. Its more than just a "flight sim". Drawing on that is pretty "savvy". $100 worth of "savvy"? I may well be damned. Oh well, I must be intoxicated... \:D

Re: Khe Sanh by Yankee Air Pirate - 10/12/06 03:55 PM

I can make them. They just aren't little. We will be putting them onto our (permanently under construction) Media page right after I get out a huge customer update and post the new missions.

The Khe Sanh battlefield is mesmerizing. This is it's second build. There is one more planned. We just don't know if the engine will take it. THAT one would make a decent animated short.

Give me the traditional "two weeks".

Re: Khe Sanh by Yankee Air Pirate - 10/12/06 05:24 PM

That detail on the gun crew tells me that this is more than just a commercial venture to these guys, I just wish this could have been done on a more up to date engine but "very good" that we have beats "awesome" that we don't.

Re: Khe Sanh by Yankee Air Pirate - 10/12/06 11:23 PM

A simple telephone call from Austin and we will drag it all over to a sim that refuels, shoots downhill, and allows for positive interaction between friendly objects without too many smoke/mirror combinations.

That would free us from this narrow angle we have now...selling to those people who can still remember where they threw their WOV disk. Then we would be doing it for the money...and so would he.

And, BTW, it's still pretty damned awesome. TK's engine produces the most amazing images while in motion. These are 2D screenshots. Any player will tell you the depth of YAP is far beyond what you can see here. It does help to have these things done by eye-witnesses.

Chico 2: The colonel said it was hazy, broken, a little windy. Late in the day. He said he kept it above 400 knots the whole strike. Lots of groundfire. Got 4 sampans with one Rockeye. So we give you that day, the Phantom, the rockeyes, the shooters, 3 vulcans, air traffic, Marine jets from Chu Lai, and four sampans (with floating things if you hit them). Play Beat the Colonel. Knowing it IS that day as much as we can make it is awesome to us.

Well, each of these postings and screenshots inches me closer towards taking the plunge and making the purchase.

I'd still like to see some sort of automated installation for those, like me, who don't know the inner workings of the game like the back of my hand.

Anything to make installation easier would be really helpful and much appreciated.

Leeman: Here's the inside poop on installers.Right after I get all the customers updated with a Drag & Drop version of YAP 1.29 (so they can pick and choose what they want to do) and then update all the missions based upon additions to the game, THEN...the installer. We are hoping the game will stay in that base configuration for a while so we can just add airplanes and doodads and effects.

If yes, wich one is it?

How's about some CV action. Gets kinda lonely launching and recovering without anyone on the "ghost ship". Some planes on the elevator decks, or up front being armed. Paddles and his group over by the "meatball" calling your wire. The CAG up on vulchers row, just waiting. Tons of ships company, working on planes, preflighting, refueling etc.. Still love YAP, keep up the good work.
