Disaster on the Frontiers 2.1

Disaster on the Frontiers 2.1 - 07/21/07 10:11 PM

I've released the latest version of my Disaster on the Frontiers Eastern Front DGen campaigns. There are three major improvements:

-I've added the German MG42, which has replaced some of the heavier German flak in the early campaigns, so Shturmoviks should get more advantage from armour.

-Many of the more barren pre-'45 airfields have added detail. This uses up the DGen object limit, so if you land at other than your base the airfield may only be half-complete. I've also experimented with trenches, on the newest map.

-I've reworked the fighter ops. There will be fewer fighter-bombers, with escorts, to lessen the problem of fighters persisting with ground attack when engaged. There should also be more and larger engagements- especially at Kursk.

Suggestions and bug reports welcome.

Be aware that this add-on will not work with the combination DGen addon, because the campaign designations are different. While a freeware DGen update along the lines of the default scheme update would be welcome, it might be better to retain as many of the existing campaign designations as possible, to allow ongoing careers.

What is the combination DGen addon?

Sounds good, hope to be able to try it soon (probably no earlier than september though), thanks a lot for sharing your creations with us \:\)

Yes- if you have Enjoyr's compilation you'll have to wait for his update. If not, you can just unzip and overwrite your existing DGen.

With ongoing careers, save your users and mission/campaigns/xx folders before updating. There is the occasional issue that can be resolved by a simple fix- for instance on the Belgorod map, the Bf109G2s have been removed, so any shotdown G2s in the damage file of your career have to be replaced by F4s or F2s. This is only if you are currently on the Belgorod42 map, not if you are earlier or later in your career.

By September I might have released a Kiev map...

"When Zhukov suggested good military reasons for giving up Kiev, Stalin exploded- and so in turn did Zhukov, incensed at being accused of talking 'rubbish'."

The Soviet attack on Kiev began in November 1943- though since it was bogged down because of a lack of snow, continuing to early 44 would be possible. The problem with 1941 is that the Soviet troops were almost isolated from any air support at all. Bessarabia 1941 might be an alternative. I had considered Kiev 41 and Bessarabia 44, because of the lack of a Kiev winter map, but after researching the battle it seems that this isn't a problem.

Of course this depends on a new DGen.exe... I'd also like to add schemes for those aircraft not updated with new defaults, but that depends on the new patch and what it contains. The Stukas and Heinkels could use new schemes.

Well i'm sure that when the patch is out, if Starshoy has some spare time, interestings things could come \:\)

At least he hasn't said no.... The generated missions are hitting the object limit, so I'd like him to raise that. I could put more detail and targets on the templates, but they wouldn't appear in the missions.

I was able to hit (and get raised) the template limit numbers, but never the mission object limit, you certainly built heavy detailed targets !

I've updated the download with a couple of revised ops files that had failed to make an appearance- though they're not essential to successful mission generation.

Nice job on this update, Amagi. I had a look at a couple of the files in the FMB and noticed you didn't include any trench networks (Operation Citadel and Hungary 1945). Is there a reason for this?

I used the trenches in the new map to try to simulate the Sevastopol 42 forts, as an experiment. The bunkers might not be as solid as I'd like. The main problem is that when not everything on the template turns up in a mission, you can get half-complete trench networks, which wouldn't be good. Sandbags use less objects, and other than the dugouts the trench sections are redundant without soldiers to put in them.

Kursk, Kurland, the Rzhev salient and perhaps the Kuban might be candidates for trenches if this problem is resolved. I wouldn't consider Hungary as one of the maps most notable for fortifications, though?

Amagi

Just like to say you have done an an amazing job here. I am currently flying the 1944 Crimea campaign using a FW190A8, we are in the middle of a bomber escort me & my wingman cruise up to 4500 thinking this will be high enough, the soviets never fly this high. I then get the "bandits 12oclock high" so I start lookin around thinking some of our low flyers ar getting hit. I look up & see contrailing 109s duking it out with P39s! This was a shock, and here I am thinking "drag em down boys" cause I aint goin up there. But I dont have a command for that do I lol. It was one of those "freaky situations"

Thanks, dasriech. The odd 'free' mission is often a relief, if you don't have too many... However, I haven't set the P39s that high. Where one side only has a small area of the map, as with Sevastopol, it's more common to meet flights of aircraft other than the main 'planned' encounter- the interceptors supposed to attack your bombers might have been chasing a recce plane or a two-plane element that climbed away from them. It's worse when you're flying an attack aircraft and your escort disappears after them.

I would be interested to know whether the ship missions are working, if you get one.
