There's a program called OnTrack that's pretty good for this situation.

I haven't used it in several years, but there was either a free or trial version that worked great.

Thanks, tried it but it didn't really find anything new. But after a lot of full-text searching in the data the "repair" tech had recovered I've at least been able to patch together most of my missing bits of code, papers etc.

Still I probably should've taken the drive to a specialized recovery place right away. Ah well, time to move on.
