i think there is a voice comm function built into il2, but i havnt tried it in the last few versions (there are comm settings in il2 that can conflict with other voice comm systems).

a good free voice comm system you can use is ventrilo, free for up to 8 users i think, and very good audio quality (better than teamspeak). so you can run your own small voice server for coops etc..

We do use flying helmets over here?

What's wrong with that?

HIFI Mic, 5.1 sound, TIR Vector Expansion, all in one set.

"Like a stunned mullet" is very common in Australia, most commonly "He just stood there like a stunned mullet" meaning in complete bewilderment or astonishment or in a state of inertia \:D

Yeah, the cotton khaki drill version with the neck flap? That's a type D, I've got a late pattern version with the smaller receiver holders:

or there's the aertex mesh material version, that's a type E:

It's interesting to collect this stuff, mostly all organic materials back then and all hand made too!

Okay, so my wife glanced at the screen while I was viewing this thread and had two reactions:

First: "Wow, that almost makes you look cool by comparison."

Ten minutes later, worried look on her face:

"That wasn't eBay, was it?"

Confession time: I've considered buying flying helmets (two, one for WWII era, one for more modern stuff) and even oxygen masks, but I do think my wife would have me committed if I wore them while sim flying.

There's a WWI museum at the local flying club near where I live. It's been around for about 30 years now and specializes in the construction and flying of replica scout aircraft from the Great War time period. Most guys use David Clark headsets with attenuating mic.s for open cockpit work, apparently a previous flying member used a WWII vintage RAF helmet and O2 mask (for the microphone, no hose) through a home made adapter and he was the only guy who had crystal clear comms. Obviously the fact that the mic was shielded from the wind helped but even the receivers were of very high quality sound. Pretty good for 60+ year old technology.

You can check out the museum website here:
