After 26 missions and 44 kills I finally lost my DGen pilot (Slovak, Messer E7, Kuban 1942) by flying into an IL-4 I was shooting down.

That is by FAR the highest number of missions I have ever managed. Mostly it is around 10.

After all these years the most I can get is 26 missions? I'd never have made it in RL!

We fly completely differently in a sim than we would in real life ... at least I know I do.

That is one of the things that makes combat flight sims fun.

I think in real life you would have given up up your attack before you ran into someone. Thats the cool thing about sims, you dont have to worry about real life consequences!

Heck, if I flew all my campaigns DID, I'd seldom get to 10! 26 is quite good, methinks.

No Instant Success is my friend.

Today, I started a Kurland 109G6 campaign.....first mission, tried to stay with my wingman, got 2 bandits on my tail, called for help -- then got position on them, dived right into the lead plane, he climbed at me -- and shot my pilot right between the eyes.

I think I'll be flying that one again.....

I will not lead, nor will I follow, and if you want to come through here you have 3 choices: go around; ask nicely; or bring a lunch -- you'll be here a while.

I don't think I've ever made it that far, without "Instant Success".

Somebody (Siggi???) had a website where people were listing their campaign achievements, lol, over a hundred missions without dying.
Not me. Heck I screw up landings once in awhile, especially if damaged.

I think 25 missions is quite good.

Let us not under-estimate Galland's attribution of "luck" in surviving combat. Knowing you will not be penalized the "ultimate price" emboldens the virtual pilot. Don't be so hard on yourself.

I think the main difference is that they didn't run into flak and fighters on every mission IRL. Bomber crews did, and many of them didn't survive a 30-mission tour...

(Something like 50% of RAF Bomber Command aircrew were KIA.)

Was just flying, while you writng that, a He-162c over Kurland, fun little camapign called Baltic Sparrows. Been dying alot, I got sick of restarting, so I just take the deaths now, just to finish it. I've died like 11 times since my fifth restart! That 162 doesn't like getting slow on final approach.

Finally got a "piece of cake" mission. Night intercept of unescorted Douglas transports. So I pushed my luck. Attacked them from the rear at 500kph to 600kph. One burst, Close In, and they just flew apart , and me right thru the debris. Wings and engines flying everywhere. \:D

Me? I got seven I think, and not a scratch. Ran out of ammo, there was one left.

Nice part about dying in a Combat Simulator is you'll always find yourself back in IL-2 heaven \:\)
