Hi Chris,
Try the stuff in this
post and see if that doesn't help you out. Without knowing what your graphics card situation is, it's about as specific as people can get right now.
There is a great deal of information on what can cause the error, either at Dumo's Wiki or by researching the error here, but not all that many fixes exist. Your processor is not an issue, nor is your operating system. The real issue is your graphics card and your driver package. In a very few cases, the DirectX install may have some problems, so you might run DXdiag (Start | Run |
dxdiag | Run) just to check the health, or else install the most current version of DirectX over your current install just to be sure yours is OK.
As to drivers, you may have to do some experimenting to find the right package for your needs. For the more recent nVidia cards, v.66.93 seems to be the latest version which can successfully run EAW without some other form of intervention, such as using Mr. Jelly's 7217 fix. First create a Restore Point. Next, you would, however, want to uninstall the current package, then run a driver cleaner product several times in a row in order to fully clean out the more modern drivers, then install v.66.93 drivers. Do note that if you happen to have an nForce chipset, the driver cleaner product may show you those files as well, so have your current nForce drivers available to install again if needed--that's in case you accidentally remove your chipset drivers as part of the cleaning process. Again, though, without knowing what your specific card is or the bus it is using, I can't really speak to that issue.
The quickest, cheapest fix is to run Sydbod's v.1.26e patch (which should be the patch of choice anyway, rather than the MicroProse v.1.2 patch) on a clean full EAW install, then copy in the files contained in Mr. Jelly's E folder. These are available from the Wiki link in the above post. The more expensive, time-consuming fix is to get another video card which still contains hardware support for 8-bit rendering.
Cheers,
Kay
Edit: Sorry, Steven--you're way too quick for me
I didn't see your post when I started mine.
