Hello all

Just got the game last week. My flight sim background is not hardcore but I guess you can say I'm somewhat of a fan of the "real" sims (like the IL-2 series)

I am just re-learning alot of the avionics but dedcided to start a new Balkman campaign on friday.

I am only on my 4th mission of the campaign because of the damn SA-6 keep destroying my entire flight before we can attack our target.

I am mainly doing A-G missions but cannot fo r the life of me avoid the Sa-6s. So I tried a different apporach...

I have my second element armed with HARM and we all go intogether.. at say 20nm (or even less) I give the order to attack my traget (the closest SA-6). They always refuse this order. I know they have the HARM because I always double check the munitions for them.

So fine. I decide then to take the 4th fighter in the flight and use the HARM by myself taking a long lead ahead of the flight (with their bombs) so I can neutralize the SA-6 before they arrive.

Simple avionics on.. I go to A-G mode master arm on... target a SA-6..wait ... wait wait for the in range icon to appear.. wait wait.. fly by the Sa-6.... sharp dive pull away then 180 towards them again ECM on Chaff dropping like crazy as my copit is filled with the sounds of launches and locking of radar.. NOTHING. I have been palying the 4th mission over and over for several hours and cannot get passed them. they destroy the entire flight before anyone can drop any bombs on target.

I tried this at 10K m altitude, 5k m, 800 and still nothing. What does it take to get a HARM to lock on the SA-6 in simple avionics mode?

Don’t Ever fly inside the threat circle of a known SA-6 site above 500 feet unless your able to jam it strait on. http://www.streamdump.com/videos/display.php?h=d5e30b

If one surprisingly “lights” up and you are way inside the threat circle, dive for the deck and get out of there. Then if you have HARMs loaded reengage and launch before crossing the threat circle.
Haven’t tried Simple avionics for years, but in realistic mode you lock up the emitter on the SMS page when the HARM is activated.

Avoiding the Sa-6 advice is noted and taken in consideration.

I am at work now so I cannot try it out until later this evening. I do know that the SA-6 in the region do have the Straight Flush radar which should be my taregt to immobilize all the SAM in that specific area.

My question remains though: Using simple avionics, how to I engage my HARM to my radar target. I cannot get a lock on a radar contact (which does light up on the threat radar)

That’s not possible. You have to lock up the emitter (target) with the cursor on the HARM/SMS page.

You may have to change from bombs to HARM on the SMS. I think you can cycle weapons with the Enter/Return key. It's been too long since I've seen savionics. When you get ready, I think you'll enjoy ravionics much more in terms of gameplay satisfaction.

Hey, would simplionics and realionics be better? ;\)

And I think that you need to use Backspace-key to cycle AG weapons. Enter-key is for AA weaps.
Regarding loading AI with HARMS : If they're not on a SEAD/DEAD mission, they won't use them AFAIR. Thats why they didn't engage it

dagger,

also keep in mind that the campaign operates much closer to reality in that you really should have a SEAD flight take out that SA-6 before going anywhere near it. Thanks to F4AF you can create your own packages/flights. I usually throw a SEAD escort in my ground attack missions unless I know there is nothing out there. The computer doesn't always task those for you, but you can always schedule a seperate SEAD package to coincide earlier if your flight is much later in the day. Then you don't need to waste those valuable wingman hardpoints

I've had AI aircraft in OCA strikes take out airport radars with HARMs while striking an enemy airbase. I didn't even tell them to attack the radar specifically, they just did it on thier own.

Hello together,

I have the same problem. I am doing the training mission No. 25 with simplified avionics. I can't get a lock or shoot signal with my harms, even if I have the radar locked on my right mfd (ground target mode).

I have switched to AG mode and i have selected a harm as weapon. What is my mistake?! I don't get a lock or shoot signal?!

Thanks for the help.

Hi!

I have solved the problem! Just press <Backspace> and select one of your harm missiles. You can see the selection on the right mfd. Here a AGM88 must be selected. Now use your mouse and press the button next to the display where <INV> is shown.

Now you have the mfd configured to select a target. With <Shift + F11> or <Shift + F12> you can adjust the range of the screen.

If you have an alert on your RWD, just select the radar on the right mfd with the cursor and wait until you get your shoot signal.

Thats it! Magnum!

Dagger,

First off, the harm page at 60 mile setting looks like a big circle with a set of cursors..numbers and letters in it. the numbers and letters are sam sites, search radars etc. In the example u give..there would have been a bright green 6 somewhere close to you. Using the cursors on the harm page, scroll the cursor over the six and hit number pad 0. Fire when in range.

Second suggestion..you'll get more out of F4af if you forego the simple avionics and use the realistic. its a bit more to learn, but the avionics work for you much better.

I would highly recommend going away with simplified anything in the sim. Because once you learn the easy mode and you want to learn the real mode you will be just as lost as the day you bought it.

Here is what I suggest every new pilot, go with 100% realism (adjust Tanker and Padlocking however you choose) then turn on the "God Mode" invulernable *sp. Fly the jet like you would if you didn't have god mode on, go defensive when you are attacked, fly it like you could be shot down. Basically the same thing principle for real pilots when they are in real Sim.

I'll 2nd using realistic settings to learn with as panther suggested.

I'd also suggest learning to use Bullseye calls as well. Once you get the basics of it you can kind of get a mental picture of where a Bandit might be in relation to you if the call was to a different flight.
