I suppose I tend toward naviete sometimes but when I heard the news on radio this morning I felt nothing but simple pride and warmth for the fellow who got the award.
Being as I am a little left of centre I dont care much for the present government either but I just refuse to let that alter my feelings toward brave people who put their lives on the line for their comrades.
Slightly off topic here but I've always felt that they've been a bit stingy with the VC in the past. Not to water it down in any way but I think there should have been a few more fighter command VCs during the last war. I mean to get the DSO three times for combat service, to me that just says give him a VC. At least Johnny Johnson and Pat Pattle to start with. Anyone else agree?

Soupdragon - just a minor factual correction to your initial post:
The last VC awarded to a LIVING recipient was 36 years ago, not 60. Warrant Officer Keith Payne, an Australian Army officer, won the VC for actions in the Vietnam War in 1969:

The VC is awarded for gallantry and for saving or attempting to save the lives of one's comrades at a very high and real risk of giving one's own life in the process I think Billy.

Not for bravery under fire or for killing the enemy in large numbers, both of which are expected of the British Army soldier \:\)

WCE material here.

Okay, a simple "wrong" would've done just fine.
