My Beagle was acting strange the other day, like he had distemperment or something...so I brought him to the vet. I was there for at least 6 hours, we had urine tests, blood tests , and an X-ray. The doc sent me home, and never even really found the problem or issued medication, and I was left with a $250 Canadian BILL...

For someone who only works part-time and has other priorities It is hard to accept things like this.

I would pay thousands to save my dog, he is priceless to me. Thank god that whatever he had is now starting to fade away.

Just thought I'd bring that story up to you all, dog got really sick, brought it to vet, got a 250 cheque, and dog is coming around...

Don't know If I am happy or sad!

My dachsunds have been like that before, just not themselves...either oddly agressive, or the times they just sit around all day, dont even eat or go outside...sometimes it can be attributed to just a cold or flu or something, and it suually wears off in a day or so.

I have it on my Bassett Hound...It's a lifesaver...After I spent 400 bucks because he was limping and hobbeling around at 1 year old, the vet took X-Rays and sent them to "secialist" only to tell me "It's normal"..."They're growing pains"....

If he goes back for anything remotely like this again, insurance will reimburse us a major portion of it....

It's some cash up front, but at least you get some back...

Works for Flea and Tick pills as well....

thanks Rotor for that thread, we just brought our Lasa Aspo to the vet for his second trip in a month.

First visit he got into a litter box which clumps, he couldn't digest it and got sick. A night in the Doggy hotel cost us over $500, this second trip was only $65.

He is our first child, luckily my inlaws love him just as much and helped us alittle with the first bill;)
I'll have to look into that pet insurance \:\)

Pets... Im amazed at how people get attached to animals. My mother in law has a dog whose is a purebred Samoyed and his hips are shot to hell even though the dog is only 12 years old. She has spent thousands of dollars on this dog in a vain attempt to prolong his life (and misery in my opinion).

I have a mutt from the SPCA. She's a great dog and I really like her a lot. She's good with the kids, growls like a maniac when there is someone at the door she doesn't know, and never runs into traffic. She doesn't poop and pee in the house and she's leash trained.

That being said, when the dog begins to cost me that kind of money, I am going to pay my last $25 of medical expenses to have a sodium pentobarbital drip administered.

Biss, you may feel that way, but explaining it to the kids is harder. You grow up with a pet, they become family. The cat I grew up with lived for 18 years.

It's fine to end suffering, but if you start equating it in financial terms, you may as well do it to your own kin too. And when was the last time your dog asked you for an XBox? ;\)

Biss I have grown up with this dog. It is a hunting dog (Which I actually use) and in my opinion stronger bonds are formed, but that is purely MY opinion.

I have shot literally hundreds of Snowshoe Hair with this guy and when Rivers passes on someday, I don't think I will be up to training another It just won't be the same.

But, Fall is here and Many more hunting days await \:D

Right, I have three cats and indeed, at every little stomach disturbance, unusual sheding of hair, mood swings due to heat periods (two females! and a male), I have the vet doing house calls and sure enough, the ridiculous bills that come along with it...

But then again, I love those guys so even though horrendous, the bills are really of little concern as long as those guys stay healthy and happy.

Cheers.

I had to put my Beagle down this past Monday afternoon after 13+ years. Because of medical complications and in spite of the specialists doing everything they could to save her, she took a bad turn this past weekend and is gone. Painfully, our other two dogs are looking around for her.

Never be sorry you spent the money on them. Your pet would surely do it for you if they could.

I've spent serious money on vet bills for sure. I had a Golden retriever for 13 years. He was a great companion and shared my twenties with me. I've got a neat picture of us off the Maine coast. Me snorkling, he swimming beside.

I'd do it again too.(For a cat I know these days, no less)

Baird...sounds like the the vet ripped you off mate.
I mean, did you ASK for all those procedures to be done?
Or did the vet suggest them?
