Cam2Pan works reasonably well in flashlight mode for me, I need a bit more time trying to get the settings correct and some new batteries to give you some decent feedback. Thats with SDOE, haven't tried much with IL2 yet.

Just a bump to see if anyone has got the latest version working. If so.. Whats the verdict?

Well... I already had a webcam that I wasn't using and so I downloaded the trial and I am fine tuning it now.

I am not having big problems with it except that it seems like it's either too sensitive and jumpy or not responsive enough (in other words I have to twist my head a lot in order to check the limits of my FOV, my 6).

That been said, considering I don't have the money to buy Track IR (and honestly I wouldn't spend that much money even if I had it), I think this is worth the effort AND the few bux they ask for.

That's just a first impression though and I am still experimenting with it.

If you guys are still interested I will give it a good combat trial (both offline and online) and I will write a short report this weekend on my ... "findings" on how it performs, etc.

I would be very interested in your final report. Or anyones for that matter. I have a webcam in storage at my parents. But it will be awhile before I make a trip there to pick it up.
Since it is out of my way, just wondering if it is worth it.

Thanks

Never did get Cam2Pan functioning well enough before the timed trial ended. It wasn't too bad for just flying around the aerodrome in SDOE, but combat was pretty much out of the question for me. With my webcam, I had to operate in "flashlight" mode so others might have had better results.

Another alternative is found here for the budget minded.

I played with it for the past 2 days and the outcome is that I will not use this.

It's a shame cause it's actually a brilliant idea but this system is just too ... jittery and imprecise.

If I had no other alternatives I would probably go for it anyway (it's really cheap after all) and I am sure that the developer will spend more time on it, improving it and making it more precise and usable.

As it is now, I will switch back to my old system, which IMO is more precise and a lot more effective (for me at least).

Highlighted in blue is my joystick, in red my normal mouse and in green my "secret track ir" . That's just a logitech trackball Logitech Marble Mouse USB to be exact (which is for both left hand and right hand) and it's situated on my left side. I use it with my left hand (obviously) and I can pan and track planes with a decent precesion. I bound the right mouse button to "forward view" so when I have to use my left hand on the keyboard or the joystick controls I switch to forward view, do my thing (open the radiator, flaps, throttle, whatever) and switch back pan with the trackball.

For now I will use that. In spite of everything I see no point in wasting 100+ bux on Track IR when my system works just as good (for me) and I am saving to get a Radeon 9700 ... that's more important IMO.

I'm afraid I might crush that.

lol they really should start making joysticks with trackballs integrated into them. I put one in the base of my Oldie Goldie Logitech Wingman Mk I recently and it gives me full viewing control under my left thumb at any given moment. It's even cheaper then Cam2Pan at a little over $30. It's called the Off-Table Track Mouse or Mini Mouse and is a handheld.

Ordinary trackballs are nice, but less nice if you have to remove a hand from your stick/hotas to operate them. And I hate stuff dangling from my head which also requires me to keep my focus fixed onto anything in an unnatural way, so this is the only way to go for me.

If you don't mind that, then TrackIR will be great, the Gyro Mouse probably as well. But with my 'secret' weapon I'm able to follow a Lagg3IT AI Ace anywhere it wants to go and never lose track of it even in my trusty (but oh so unforgiving) A5.

So, I guess I won't be needing an alternative for that.. Still, keep the search alive and going, it's very interesting to hear what other ppl have found out and can come up with! In the end, things can only get better and better in that way, for us all.

This may sound stupid but has anyone tried taping a piece of white paper to their forehead? I mean like a Post-it-note sized square.
