Holy Cow, If it works for skins what about Ground Object? Can this 512x512 be done to any existing skin. Can they be converted? Went more HiRes skins start to become available for D/L will this start to effect the frame-rate of lesser powered PC?

You're going to be p***ed of? Jeez, I spent half a year on the HR mustang and it's only taken 5 minutes to make to one in the above screenshot - using Salty's pcx work of course . If only we'd known eh? Having said that it sounds like it might not work on all machines.

Well for all intersted, click on the link below to download the files I used to make the Mustang screenie above. Just unzip them all into your EAW folder. Let us know if it works or if it CTD's. It's still only early days.

Note:
It will not work for 3DFX Voodoo 1,2 & 3, as well Banshee, since they are hardware limited to a max 256x256 texture size.
But TNT2, ATI Radeons and GForce series can take up 2048x2048 texture size.


Chompy, just another thing:
IF it works for 512x512, it may also works for 1024x1024, since you discover it is not locked to 256^2 size by EAW 3D engine ...

I've tried your zip and....

Crashed and burned!

I've read the post on the other thread by VonBeerhofen:

loaded the zip into a new 1.2....runs OK until the HR model needs to be rendered then ....Lock-up...even with the p51 out but the grnd09 left in...go low....lock-up...

so Voodoo3000 cards can't handle this even in d3d mode....carry on with the good work Col.!

S! Gentlemen,

Just tried the P51D and it doesn't run here either. I have to remind you that problems were also encountered when a mission was aborted and I tried to refly the same mission. The 512*256 skin I tested runs fine untill I refly. I am using a Gforce 2 GTS 32 MB. I tried the same thing as Chompy and even enlarged all TPC's for the spit to both resolutions. Only thing that happened was I had a UHR cockpit with all dials in the wrong place and when I looked at the cockpit wingview a CTD occurred. My horizon was also replaced with parts of the intsrumentpanel, i.e. it had been overwritten. Could 32MB not be enough? What is the difference with Chompy's card. Is max texture size on my card 512*256? Also tried with my old grnd09.tpc (512*256) and that also crashed. I would gladly upgrade to an older or newer videocard to see this thing working. After all a lot of work was involved and like a few other skinners said I hate to have to redraw my entire Tropic pack to 512*512 but if it works, I will gladly do the work. Answer to a question asked above about groundobjects. Most of mine have allready been upgraded to 512*256 and I haven't found any restrictions, except I cannot get the ***.TER files to use UHR. What will happen if for instance something like all groundfiles are UHR (512*512), how much RAM do we need on our videocards? Lol, this is gonna cost me again.

just tried by the same way Chompy described and got CTD

AMD 1.4, 512 RAM, GeForce 2 400MMX .32mb, Direct X 8.1, windows Millenium
